Chapter 1-5 completed.

Her sisters wants to help her powers come in by time her deathday which is her 16th bday.
Something strange happens at school as she tries to protect her best friend Rishi from a boy. Her powers are out of control (hide spoiler)]

She met a boy Nova that also us a witch that gave her advice that trying to stop her powers can cause more problems.
Her deathday is pushed up and it's time to celebrate while she rather not have powers at all. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Wow Alex wanted so badly to get rid of her powers to the point she's caused her family to disappear to Lo Lagos. Now with the help from the boy Nova to open a portal to go get her family back. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 13-17

(view spoiler)[ Alex and Nova went through the portal to Los Lagos to get her family back. Things people animals aren't not the same in the real world. To get Nova to go she had to pay him.
But it's life or death in Los Lagos as they try to say alive in order to find her family. (hide spoiler)]

So far I like this story. (view spoiler)[ Deathday doesn't sound like much fun to me. Sacrificing animals and all that doesn't sound that great, but I guess it's more about becoming "an adult" and meeting other brujos and brujas than partying and having fun after all. Anyway, I can see why Alex is not that excited, especially when her powers seem to put her family in danger. (hide spoiler)]

@Clementine. (view spoiler)[ I wondered the same thing about Rishi. The way Alex described her sounded like they could be more than friends. Or maybe it's just Alex having feelings for Rishi or something. (hide spoiler)]

I understand that (view spoiler)[ Alex is desperate to get her family back but I don't like the way she practically forces Nova to help her. Well, she said she would pay him, but it doesn't change the fact that she tried to blame him for what happened. Would she have made him help her, if he hadn't agreed to do it? (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 5-10: (view spoiler)[It felt like the author wanted to force Nova and Alex together. Honestly, she should have cleaned up her own mess. Forcing Nova to help her was disgusting, I agree with Katriann. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 18-24

(view spoiler)[ Alex sister Lulu uses her own magic to appear to Alex to help Alex to control her magic in order to heal 3 large birds. It was to get her Nova and her friend Rishi out of being killed due that Nova stole germs.
Oh rishi appears in Los Lagos due that she jumped into the portal once she heard Alex screaming.
Los Lagos has some amazing interesting things such as danger and prettiness too.
They were warned to stay to the right path buy Madea which is something of a large bird. Ignoring her due they felt the path to the right looked more dangerous than the path in the middle. (hide spoiler)]

Rishi (view spoiler)[I wish she would address how discovering Los Lagos make her reconsider her beliefs. Doesn't she wonder if her mythology also exists and how does how all of these realms coexist (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 21-27: (view spoiler)[ The fairies inviting them to eat reminded me of Persephone's myth. :P Glad Alex could help them but why is so special? (hide spoiler)]

I'm hoping to finish soon. My oldest daughter turned 15 today so reading has been on the backside today lol. But the story is interesting.

I just finished and I'm not sure how I feel about the book...

Rishi and Alex(view spoiler)[Since Nova did something unforgivable,
he was cast aside as the second love interest and that somehow cheapens what Rishi and Alex have. I mean if he hadn't, Alex wouldn't be with Rishi, she would still debating which one,
she likes best. Besides, everyone is just too chill with Alex showing up with a girlfriend. (hide spoiler)]

The last battle(view spoiler)[was anticlimatic. The chapter began with "Xara wouldn't give up without a fight", but two pages later this is EXACTLY what happens. Things moved slowly for the second half while hitting every possible formulaic elements of YA fantasies.
The unusual setting wasn't enough to make up for the gross Chosen One trope. (hide spoiler)]

The ending(view spoiler)[His dad being back is the worst kind of ending.
Besides, the second book isn't even about Alex... Like no. (hide spoiler)]

Done...yeah I'm not so sure about this story too. Bites of it dragged but I made myself keep going.

Alex comes from a long line of bruja and brujo. She just wants to be normal and not embrace her magic.
On her deathday she tries so hard to get rid of her magic that led to her getting rid of her family instead.
As they were sent to Los Lagos. A boy name Nova that is a brujo helps her to travel through a portal to save her family.
While there things just isn't what the real world looks like.
Trying to save her family from.the devour meaning​ using her powers

The bisexual love interest was interesting.
The fansty world was interesting.
Bits of the story dragged.
The ending was a okay ending of course after getting her family back.

I may read part 2. I actually enjoyed Rishi funny self I would like to know more about her and of Alex too. (hide spoiler)]

I had to focus on other books for a while because they were due back to library, but I'll try to catch up with this buddy read soon.

I have now read 25 chapters.

I kind of like (view spoiler)[ Rishi's character but I'm not sure I like it that she came to Los Lagos. I also find it a bit weird that she accepts Alex being a bruja so easily. I would think she'd have a hard time believing such a thing as she hasn't even known magic exists. (hide spoiler)]

I get that Alex (view spoiler)[ is an encantrix and all that, but it's a little bit too convenient that she can do pretty much anything with her powers. It's like the author is taking the easy way out. It doesn't matter what kind of trouble Alex and her friends run into because Alex is an encantrix. She can heal, make a boat fly, fight the bad guys and whatever... (hide spoiler)]

@Lesa, (view spoiler)[ I liked Rishi too and I also found the bisexual love triangle interesting. Although, I must say it felt a little unrealistic to me that Nova was in love with Alex. I mean, how long had they known each other? A few days? A week? I felt like the relationship between Alex and Rishi was more believable than the relationship between Alex and Nova. (hide spoiler)]

@Clementine, (view spoiler)[ I agree with you on the ending. The final battle was just too easy and kind of blah.... And Alex being the chosen one was annoying. I also found it annoying that aunt Rosario was chosen to rule Los Lagos...or whatever it was that she was supposed to be doing. Why was she even special enough to be chosen? Yeah, and I agree that Alex's dad coming back was a pretty awful ending. (hide spoiler)]
