Fishface | 18931 comments This is based -- really very loosely -- on the killing spree of Henry Lee Lucas. I found it utterly revolting to watch, even though they sanitized it in some ways -- for instance, Becky Powell was fast-forwarded to adulthood even though she was only 14 when she became Henry Lee's 'girlfriend' and then serial-murder victim.

I originally saw this one because two co-workers misunderstood the blurb they read about it, and said it was composed of films taken by Henry Lee and his sidekick, Ottis Toole, of their own murders in progress. This was nothing of the sort. It did have some scenes of Henry filming an assault with a camera stolen from a victim, but as far as I know that never happened, and there were other scenes in here that never happened, like the one that shows Ottis raping Becky, being interrupted by Henry who killed Ottis, chopped him up in the bathtub and added him to the list of the dead. (If that had happened, Adam Walsh might be alive today...) But this was a grisly, exploitative, often nauseating movie for those who like that type of story, so it has its niche despite the inaccuracies.

Erin | 376 comments I saw this movie when I was like 13 or 14 but it was until years later that I learned it was based off of a real serial killer.

How many people do you think he really killed?
He confessed to hundreds but most people don't believe his body count was that high.

Fishface | 18931 comments I'm under the impression he was solidly connected with 11 deaths, but only convicted of about 3. Most of the confessions were cases fed to him by police who were not careful in questioning him -- gave away too much.

He actually led police to the spot where he left Orange Socks and showed them the awkward position in which her body was actually found. Unless some doofusy cop drew him a map and showed him the crime-scene photos it would be hard for him to make that up.

Erin | 376 comments I read somewhere that when asked why he didn't BBQ and eat his victims like Otis Toole?
He said it was because he didn't like BBQ sauce.

Jay (mrisolatedalienated) Henry Lee Lucas at the most killed 3 people.
His incredibly abusive hateful mother, an old women who took him in, and then Becky.

Later after being exposed as a total fraud he only admitted to killing his mother.

"He actually led police to the spot where he left Orange Socks and showed them the awkward position in which her body was actually found. Unless some doofusy cop drew him a map and showed him the crime-scene photos it would be hard for him to make that up."

The orange socks case was exactly that. In fact he was sentenced to death for it. Later when it was revealed that he couldnt of done it President Bush Senior got him off death row.

One major reason why he was exposed is because
1.He admitted it. Saying "they think I'm done? I'll show them who's dumb."
2.He did this because he wanted privledges. Such as ice cream, cigerettes, steak and eggs, etc. I think they even gave him a VHS player or something like that. It was also his only form of getting out side prison. So he relished being lead outside to a crime scene.
3.They gave him all the details. Showed him photos of the crime scenes and so forth. When he would say "She was shot." they'd say "no she wasn't" He'd then say "she was stabbed." They said "no." and then he said "Oh...well I strangled her." That is how comical this was.
4.Skeptical police and detectives traced where he was at one point or another and then looked at where the murders were committed, where the bodies were left, and showed that the distance and time was incredibly impossible. It was laughably absurd on many levels.

Fishface | 18931 comments "Couldn't have done it," not "couldn't of done it."

Bushy commuted a number of sentences for reasons I disagreed with.

Yes, many of Lucas's confessions were nonsense and it took the investigators a while to sort it out; it would have been quicker with some decent interagency coordination -- you can't kill someone in Oklahoma when you're behind bars in Georgia -- but some of them were true and correct. And if he was half as sly as he came across to me, the smokescreen he produced with all the phony confessions probably concealed some other murders he did commit that nobody's ever connected him to.
