Elon Musk : Inventing the Future... Jaya Gorab Indrani
He's cool.. and all that. But I have a negative bias for extreme workaholics. I know being judgemental is bad.... can't help it.

On to Chapter 2 "Africa" now."
Waah! Hoping to get some time to read tonight...

Elon Musk is the 46 year old gentleman who has a mission.... to make other planets in space habitable by humans.
He believes the brightest minds of our generation are wasting their time focusing on earning money. Innovation needs to kick in.
Also he's a millionaire, and a geek, father of some of the craziest tech companies of the world. Ever heard of Tesla?
Its a car his company developed, runs 100% on electricity. It has automated controls, and touchscreens. By the way, touchscreens didn't exist at that scale while Tesla cars were being developed. So Mr. Musk just built one up from the scratch!!!
That kind of tech crazy stuff. This book is an insight on his life so far... to get to know his thinking mechanism, how he reached where he is today.

J, I'm somewhere in the middle of Chapter 2. Haven't encountered the bullying stuff yet.
But have been thinking about his maternal grandparents. Quite a crazy life!
Expanding on "A Room of One's Own", his family was financially much stable, so he never had to bother about earning or making a life. Example : he got that computer so early when he wanted.
With that, I guess all the adversities he faced in life would be emotional.

I think we can get rid of spoiler tags. There couldn't be any spoilers here. However, if you insist, I can use them.... and just ignore all your spoiler tags :P

i wont mention them, henceforth :D

On that, the guy has a crazy work schedule. he measures the time spent with his kids/ partners in terms of hours!
I am in your league Gorab. I dont like such ppl (no matter what great geniuses they turn out to be)

Yeah online! Hope they send it fully assembled :P
In India? Not soon. Musk is eyeing the Indian market though. Heard the expected price for a model 3 will be around 40L INR.

I think it was mentioned that on US highways (some I suppose) he has built charging stations at few miles... else an electric car wont be much use, right?.. from that angle, India looks a bit far off yet..
My only exposure to electric cars so far was Reva.. wasn't impressed

[s..."
about his childhood issues, I was a bit disappointed that the whole family bolted up.. there was a mention of "chemical" regarding his dad.. so I am thinking some sort of disorder like schizophrenia/bipolar.. though complete guess...
again a very tangential thought came to my mind.. they say good writing is to make a reader less lonely somewhere... from that angle I wish they had spoken up... perhaps it wasnt as bad as needing this much clamming up..
again top of my head comments.. most probably wayyyy off mark

on the other hand, in Jamshedpur, when my brother moved to high school at 6th std, he found the 6th std classrooms are in a separate walled section of the school with separate gates and a slightly different start/end timings.. the kids there were from a very mixed background, this being a school for all Tata employee kids.. bringing cycle chains, hockey sticks, knives of all sorts to school were common... my brother soon, due to other circumstances, moved to a kolkata school where physical violence wasnt absent but verbal assaults were more in vogue.. being a very sharp tongued individual, he fit right in and still can tongue-lash people raw.. anyway, coming back to point, I think while bullying is perhaps not as rampant as in US or even UK, it definitely is here.. I am sure boys' schools in Delhi will have it in good measure.. Also the residential schools...
I haven't faced bullying at all, at least cant remember anything now.. dont know if it is luck or gender..

and yes inny i know of 'gunda-gardi' in school, like you said maybe it wasnt so intense in the Indian context
residential schools/colleges iv heard brutal stories of ragging, that of course is bullying, nothing else...

I am hoping to stick with the book because they are definitely not my thing :))
Being from an all boys school, was lucky to escape bullying if at all present. In Indian context, have heard about ragging, and that too with a purpose to open up space between juniors and seniors... and (hypothetical) making the juniors well prepared for the world.
In US, I think they just gang up and beat an individual. Have seen it in movies and songs (No Love - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV2ss...)
Don't know the logic or origin for that? Just to prove who's the king here?

Have read the 2nd Chapter,.... and its fascinating how Musk had access to garage stuff, how machines work, flying stories of grandparents, loads of books... and on top of that an extreme geek by himself!

Wiki - "Hyperloop is a proposed mode of passenger and freight transportation that would propel a pod-like vehicle through a reduced-pressure tube that would exceed airliner speed."
Concept announced and presented by SpaceX in 2013. Questions on feasibility and budget still dangling... theoretically, you could travel in it at an average speed of 970km/hr with a top speed of 1200kmph!
Some entrepreneurs and businessmen think of building an amusement park.... This guy is trying to convert the world into one!

No electrical vehicle has been successful in Indian market so far.
Yes lots of Tesla charging pods are required. Even their charging mechanism is state of art technology.

in a much smaller scale, i am noticing a lot of this in my own life. so serendipity has struck again and you guys have given me just the right book at the right time.

Glad you're liking it so much Ini :)"
Yes. Very happy about it.
I wish I could do more BRs. But between work and other things, I am in such a confused state these days.
I noticed some of your comments on Volga se Ganga.. so unhappy about missing it.. hopefully will read soon..

This is applicable for everyone :)
Volga to Ganga is like an evergreen discussion field. Surely a candidate for reread.

Read 3 Canada , 4 Elon's First Start Up. Interesting and inspiring.
Liked this attitude :
"There needs to be a reason for a grade. I'd rather play video games, write software, and read books than try and get an A if there's no point in getting an A"
Which is in contrast to:
"If there was a way that I could not eat, so I could work more, I would not eat. I wish there was a way to get nutrients without sitting down for a meal."
Shows focused determination!

Yes.. found them very very interesting.. would read up further on these topics..

How are you guys finding it? where are you?
PS loved this line - "working in a startup is like eating glass and looking at abyss"

(Sort of in a slump, so only listening to audiobooks for a few minutes before going off to sleep)

Okay take care. Hope you feel better soon.
I'm at Paypal Mafia chapter. 4 or 5 I don't remember.
And even this I'm finding quite fast. No idea what the space X chapter would do.
This guy is legendary. Paypal stuff reminds a lot about Steve Jobs. Both are perfectionists! With an attitude problem (as stated by closed ones)

Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future
This is Ashlee Vance's biography of Elon Musk, published in 2015. The book traces Elon Musk's life from his childhood up to the time he spent at Zip2 and Paypal, and then onto SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity. In the book, Vance managed to get regular interviews with Musk, those close to him, and those who were with him at the most important points of his life; Musk had no control over the biography's contents.
