Lily and Ryle are having a date night, drinking wine and cooking dinner. When Ryle goes to pull the casserole out of the oven without an oven mitt on, Lily, a little drunk, laughs at the situation. Ryle suddenly, out of anger, pushes Lily so hard she loses her footing and hits her face on the cabinet door handles. Afterwards, Ryle is very apologetic, and promises it will never happen again.

Even though Lily has grown up in an abusive household, she does choose to believe it was an accident and forgives Ryle. Do you think she should have, or did you want her to leave right then? What did you think about Ryle and his response?

What did you think about Lily and Ryle lying to their friends and family about how Lily got injured? Should Lily have told someone?

Karen (karen1278) | 428 comments I thought this was totally unrealistic. The author is expecting us to accept the fact that a man who lives by his hands doesn't think about protecting them every moment of the day, I also don't accept the fact that Lily, who cares about Ryle at this point, would laugh.
But, going along with the storyline I hoped it would be his only time ... Ya right, remember the chair scene one the roof. All is lost.
There is always a coverup. And with Ryle being a Dr., good looking , amiable, her friends might find it hard to believe he's abusive. And yes, lily should have confided in someone.

Anna (iudita) | 450 comments I am in no way condoning his behavior but I think anyone who was reacting out of pain and panic may have done the same thing without even thinking. If that had happened to me, I would be a bit surprised and hurt but I would not automatically assume that it was the beginning of abusive behavior. However, considering that Lily grew up in an abusive home, I imagine it would have been more of a trigger to her. I think the fact that she lied about her injuries is a pretty good indication that she knew this was a problem. Otherwise, she would have just told everyone the truth.

I also thought it was a bit strange that Lily laughed. It seemed an odd reaction.
