Somebody PLEASE rip Doomsday Book out of my hands. I have been trudging through it for over a week, finding every excuse I can to NOT read it but still insisting that I MUST finish it. Why? I don't like the characters. I don't like the setting. I don't like the storyline. But still, I keep reading, 3 pages at a time. Ugh. Why am I torturing myself? I think I need an intervention! Help!

I found this book to be a real trudge in the middle especially. I did finally realize that the storyline in the present (actually: slightly our future) was quite humorous (it's a dry humor). Overall, I think the ending pulled the book back up to me. But that middle trudge is the reason why I've been telling people to start with To Say Nothing of the Dog for this series and not Doomsday Book. It's better paced, has better characters, more humor, and the same great setting. Plus the books don't need to be read in order.
I have a good friend who read Doomsday Book before me and warned me before hand. She still hasn't read the other books, due to her experience with this one, and I think that is a shame.

I understand exactly what you're feeling. I'm struggling with Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. I've been reading it for more than three months now and can't get to the end. I've gotten to skimming a lot, just to finish it. I usually take a few days-1 week to read a book! :(

I got to about 60% and sat it down on the bookshelf table just so I could glare at it every once in a while. I do intend to finish it though, someday. :-/
Well I have found there are lot of books I hate that lots of people love and visa versa... I never know why they would love something so boring (such as Secret History has really high reviews WHY WHY WHY??).... I have also found that if I hate a book in the beginning I will probably hate it in the end too! But I am stubborn and usually want to finish too.
I agree with Kelly, in general. If a book is going bad it usually doesn't charge by finishing it.But for me Doomsday Book was one of those books that was rescued by the ending. Good start, slog middle, solid ending.
Stick it out, and I can't wait to see what you think.
So. Final verdict on Doomsday Book. I ended up giving it three stars because the last 40% of the book was pretty interesting. The pace picked up, I became more invested in the characters and the storyline became more intriguing overall. I am going to read the second book in this series. If it starts out as painfully slow as this one did though, I will probably dnf it. :/
