Kristie | 19364 comments What is a Toppler, Anyway?

Here at You’ll Love This One, we have bi-monthly topplers. What is a toppler, you ask? Well, a toppler is a sort of read-a-thon that you can choose to participate it.

We have two types of topplers: 24-hour individual topplers and week-long team topplers. Each toppler has a theme or challenge associated with it.

All threads related to the topplers and discussed below will be found in the toppler folder, HERE.

Here’s how it works!

First, if there is a poll to choose dates, it will be announced with a link to the poll in the toppler folder. For these topplers, you can vote on which dates work best for you. The date with the most votes will become the date for the toppler. Topplers do not always have polls for dates, but we try to post that option as often as possible.

A discussion thread will be opened prior to the start of the toppler that explains what the rules are for that specific toppler. Once this thread is opened you can start searching for books that fit the criteria. This is also known as “gophering” for books.

Next, a thread will be opened for you to sign up. Just let us know that you want to play along. If it is a team toppler, you will be assigned to a team prior to the start of the toppler, so be sure to check back.

There is no specific number of books that you need to be able to read in order to participate. Anyone can join in these topplers and everyone is welcome.

It is time for the toppler to begin!!

24-Hour Individual Topplers:
For an individual toppler, you will choose a book (or more) that fit the theme and reading criteria listed in the challenge description. Then, when the toppler begins, read, read, read! You can go back to the toppler discussion thread as much or as little as you choose to join in the conversation, let us know what you’re reading, or discuss what you think of your book.

Once you’ve finished your book, go to the reporting thread and let us know that you’ve completed your book, what you thought about it, and how it fit the theme. Make sure to check the first post in the reporting thread for any additional reporting information.

Week-Long Team Topplers:
Once teams are announced, one member of the team will open a team discussion thread. Any member can do this. You do not need to wait for a moderator or a seasoned group member. Each team will decide upon a team name, a team leader, and a score keeper through discussion in their team thread. Don’t be shy! Step up and help your team out by being score keeper or team leader! Have fun discussing in your discussion thread!

Once the team name has been decided upon, the person that originally started the thread can change the title of your team discussion thread to reflect that name.

Team Leader: This is the person that helps to coordinate the team so that you can get the most points possible. They help to organize, keep tabs on what is still needed for points, and cheer on their team mates.

Score Keeper: This person opens a separate thread for their teammates to report the books they’ve read and keeps track of the points as they accumulate. The score keeper lets the team know what additional information is needed in the reporting thread (i.e. which task the book fit, how many points it was worth, etc). Once the toppler is done, the score keeper will add up how many points you earned as a team and report it in the toppler reporting thread.

As stated above, a separate thread will be opened for keeping score. This is not the place for random discussions. It makes the score keepers job easier if you do your reporting only in this thread and keep the discussion to the discussion thread.

So, here we are… You know what the tasks are. You have found books to fit the tasks and know what you plan to read. You have discussed with your teammates and now you are just waiting for the toppler to begin.

Here we go…5, 4, 3, 2, 1, go! Read, read, read! That’s it! Read your books, discuss with your teammates, and report in your team reporting thread as you go. Most of all, HAVE FUN!

Stephan | 69 comments I was wondering exactly this last week :) Thanks for clearing this up. Sounds like fun! I won't be able to join currently, to many reading plans at the moment..

message 3: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19364 comments Glad to help, Stephan. Hopefully, you'll be able to join another time. Our next toppler (after the one I just posted for April) will be held in June and will be a weeklong team toppler. They are so fun.

Don't be so hasty.

You may be planning to read a book right at that moment which has a proper rainbow color. Read it within that 24 hour period and Ta Da!...you've completed a Toppler!

Easy Peasey.

Like Antigravity Drive - The Diary of an Invention?

Or maybe a shorter book?

message 8: by Stephan (new)

Stephan | 69 comments Hehe, Almeta, well done :D

I nearly signed up for this month! I was about to post "I'm in" but then realized that the time frame to read it is only 1 day and I am a very slow reader. So I wouldn't even finish a book of the shorter kind if I'd spend the complete day reading. I only manage to read so much because reading is all I do.

Okay, I'll let you off the hook this time. BUT you must join in on the week long Toppler!☺

message 10: by Stephan (new)

Stephan | 69 comments *big grin* I'll put the rainbow toppler in my calendar anyways and join in spirit without putting pressure on myself ;)

Okidoki - I'm relying on you here on that hook thing :P

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments Also Stephan, you can always join in. Doesn't matter if you don't finish the book. Okay, you don't get a badge, but you read a (hopefully) good book in the 24 hours, chat, and hang out. I frequently don't complete books in the 24 hour Topplers, but I like hanging out and chatting to people while reading, so I always join in if I can.

But, of course, up to you, and no pressure. Just wanted to make sure you know it's an option.

Kristie | 19364 comments I'm a slow reader too, Stephan. I often use audiobooks to get through my topplers.

Kristie wrote: "I'm a slow reader too, Stephan. I often use audiobooks to get through my topplers."

Great idea, thanks for that :) I guess that means your on audible?

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19364 comments I am. :) I love Audible. I never listened to audiobooks until a couple of years ago. Now I listen to them all the time. I have a couple of book options that fit that aren't too long. I'll link them when I'm at my computer.

When we first started doing Topplers, we'd read for 24 hours. It was fun to see who made it through the night without falling asleep. I don't know how many still attempt an all-nighter.

message 16: by Stephan (new)

Stephan | 69 comments I can see the fun in it, just reading at the same time and posting about it :)

I haven't delved into audiobooks yet, I listen to my weekly podcasts while walking my dog or shopping and hardly finish them before the next installments come out. Can't picture myself listening to an audiobook at home!

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19364 comments There have been quite a few times I have missed out on sleep for topplers. I don't think I've ever pulled an all-nighter for one though.

Stephan, my plan for this toppler is to listen to You Are a Badass How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero . It is 5 hours and 45 minutes on audio and the first copy that pops up is 256 pages, so it is long enough for the toppler.

My second option is Good as Gone by Amy Gentry , which is 7 hours 40 minutes and the first listed as 288 pages, so that works too.

I have to make sure my book isn't too long this time because I have other things to do during the toppler, but usually I try to leave my day open to just read and if I'm listening to an audio I limit it to less than 10 hours. I can always find something that is short enough to try and fits the task.

I listen while doing other things. If I have enough time to just sit and read, I try to choose a short book 175 - 250 pages to read. I pretty much max out at 300. There is no guarantee I'll finish though.

I like that the schedule for reading where I live is noon to noon, so I can read most of the day and stay up late if I need to. Plus, I can finish the book in the morning, if I can't do it all on Saturday. I always have until noon Sunday

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments I'm sure this is probably answered somewhere, but I'm not finding it. Can toppler books be used for the Yearly challenge tasks?

message 20: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19364 comments Yes, they can. :) They can be used for monthly or yearly challenges or the monthly themed read.

You just can't use books for the monthly challenge and the yearly challenge. You can only apply books to one challenge.

I like to plan to take the week off (if possible) and give myself a reading vacation every year. *insert geeky smiley face emoji here* 📚❤️

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Generally Kristie announces the toppler roughly 2 weeks before it starts. So it might be a little while off before it's announced.

Lynn | 2987 comments Hey Kristie, just a suggestion but I don't suppose you can post in here when you put the information up for a Toppler?

That way we can activate this thread for notifications and not miss your announcement (which I'm always worried I will .... and sometimes do come on it late)

I don't know if you use the browser or the app. I use the browser. I very rarely use notifications. Instead, I review the unread folder. I never miss a new message when using it, unless it's my own error. There are several ways to access it.

I enter the group through the Community, then Discussions tab on the banner at the top of the page. Then, I click one of the red "new" to take me to that message. When you return to the top of the discussion thread, there are "unread" or "mark unread" links under the group links on the right side of the page.

You can also go to "Discussions" and the link is there as well.

When you know a toppler is going to be posted, maybe check the unread folder as a back up to missing a notification.
