Interesting article, Emily. Thanks for passing it along.
How do you guys feel about Kenneth Branagh playing Poirot in the movie coming out in November? Personally I can't see anyone other than David Suchet play Poirot, but that's just because he's the one I associate with Poirot and he just does it so well ^^

I agree with you. I think David Suchet portrays Poirot exactly the way Agatha Christie described. I can't see Kenneth Branagh portraying the great detective.

David Suchet is just perfect as Poirot, and I don't think anyone will ever do it as good as him.
I have just looked Kenneth Branagh on IMDb and found out that he played Gilderoy Lockhart in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". So, honestly, I have no idea how he could portray Hercule Poirot! But all cast of "Murder on the Orient Express" is very interesting (Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, etc.). I cannot wait to see what they came up with. However, for me, as for everybody else here, the perfect Hercule Poirot is David Suchet.
David Suchet is definitely my favorite but I'm a little excited to see how Kenneth Branagh will do.
A surprise was Tony Randall played Poirot. That's wasn't in the article but when I went to search for a picture of the mustache-less Poirot actor, I saw Tony Randall there. Not very good reviews for it.

I can't picture Kenneth Branagh as Poirot. David Suchet is the definitive one in my book and I don't think we'll see another actor play the role as faithfully as Suchet did in many, many years to come. I still have yet to see a definitive Miss Marple like Joan Hickson ever since. Though all the Suchet adaptations weren't perfect and of course there are some flaws, even with an actor like Suchet who's considered definitive in the role, a huge body of the work is well-done and did well transferring the books onto film.

I think it's understood that there's no topping David Suchet, but I'm still willing to give Ken a chance, see how he handles it.
I think is nice to have different actors playing Poirot, let's give them a chance! :) Having said that, every time I read a Poirot book I have David Suchet's character in my mind, I don't get tired of watching his movies... I watched Curtain last weekend and it was too much for my little heart! :(

I haven't watched Curtain either! I just can't make myself watch it.

I just saw on IMDB that Kenneth Branagh was going to play Poirot in a November remake of Murder on the Orient Express. As others have noted, I can't imagine it. I've come to associate David Suchet as Poirot, though I have also seen the 1974 version of MotOE with Albert Finney. For one, Branagh is too tall (5' 9-1/2") to play Poirot, who is supposed to be a squat little Belgian. The latest remake seems to feature an all-star cast that also includes Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, and Willem Dafoe. Will be interesting to see how it fares...
I'll be interested to see it as well. The Albert Finney version in the 1970s also had an all-star (for the time) cast, and I have to say Finney himself didn't square with my idea of Poirot, but I did enjoy the film.
I'm going to see the new movie when it comes out. I'm hoping Kenneth Branagh does a great job. The TV ads for it look good.

Lori wrote: "I loved his accent but the mustache was a little much."Oh yes, seeing the moustache on the posters really put me off. Poirot wouldn't be caught dead with that thing on his face. He'd never survive the mortification.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm in complete agreement about the mustache! Not to mention the soul patch -- no, no, NO!! Also -- I read in the reviews that one of the characters is named Pilar Estravados. What is she doing in this movie when she was in Hercule Poirot's Christmas?
☯Emily wrote: "Just saw a commercial and the mustache looks awful...and fake!"I agree, the mustache is seriously off-putting. It feels so unauthentic and frankly is an abomination. That being said, I will definitely watch the movie as I take any AC adaptation that comes my way.

I have enjoyed the various different Poirots I have seen, none have been exactly how I imagine him in the books. Suchet is good, but some of the tv episodes, especially the later ones, were dreadful, changing so much from the books it was really annoying. I liked Ustinov, though again not exactly how I imagine Poirot. Branagh I thought was so-so, could have been better, could have been worse.

It was more mutton choppy than Poirot's carefully trimmed dyed mustache in the books.
