A guess - Spark by Anthea Sharp?
Miriam, can you tell us more about the hero - his age, where he works, what kind of work does he do, family/friends, etc.?

Thank you for sending me this list. I went through it pretty thoroughly - took some tangents - and did not find my book, unfortunately.

At home he plays a video game online (set in a medieval environment - in the game he may be a knight) - that becomes more and more an alternate reality. He begins to dream about the game. Sometimes he doesn't know if he is awake or asleep, and starts to confuse the real world with the world inside the game. The game also changes, becoming more rich and tactile. The protagonist feels heat, cold, damp, etc.
And he is also becoming more and more curious about the game's other players. Who are they?
This book is well-written, not in any way a pulp. In fact, the depth of characterization surprised me. So although the plot is good, it is character rather than plot-driven. He gets into this mess because of who he is, like Oedipus.
I want to read this book again. Help? I have no title or author.
The book was in paperback in 2010-11, approx.
