London, 1813.

Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is no stranger to the dark side of the city, but he's never seen anything like this: the brutalized body of a 15-year-old boy dumped into a makeshift grave on the grounds of an abandoned factory. One of London's many homeless children, Benji Thatcher was abducted and tortured before his murder—and his younger sister is still missing. Few in authority care about a street urchin's fate, but Sebastian refuses to let this killer go unpunished. Uncovering a disturbing pattern of missing children, Sebastian is drawn into a shadowy, sadistic world. As he follows a grim trail that leads from the writings of the debauched Marquis de Sade to the city's most notorious brothels, he comes to a horrifying realization: Someone from society's upper echelon is preying upon the city's most vulnerable. And though dark, powerful forces are moving against him, Sebastian will risk his reputation and his life to keep more innocents from harm.

I'm not sure when I'll get to this but to all who've read it, feel free to start the discussion in the meantime.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments I've put it on hold at the library and there are 3 people ahead of me. Not too bad.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I hope to start tomorrow.

Phrynne | 607 comments It's calling out to me from my Kindle. I will start it sooner rather than later I think!

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I've heard from some who have already read it that it's the darkest one in the series yet.

Phrynne | 607 comments Dark is okay as long as Sebastian, Hero and the baby all stay safe:)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 7669 comments Mod
Absolutely!

Phrynne | 607 comments I am about half way and I see what is meant by it being dark. The subject matter is crimes on children. Not a nice topic but still an excellent book!

Jo Ann (jojog) | 72 comments While it has a heavy subject matter, this is one of my favorites
of the series! The pace is fast and I think CS Harris handles the situations by stating the facts without being gratuitous. Don't worry about Sebastian, Hero and Simon - nothing "dark" happens to them!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 7669 comments Mod
Stop teasing, Jo Ann:) My resistance is too, too low.

Phrynne | 607 comments It is one of the best of the series and also leaves the way wide open for a further book which is always good! When series get this long I am always afraid each one may be the last:)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments The author gives an interview with The Reading Life where, among other things, she talks about how far she plans to take the series. There wasn't anything that I considered spoilery. Her interview is the second one and starts at about the 14:40-14:45 mark (I just slid the little marker down to the right time).

Phrynne | 607 comments That's a really good interview Veronica and I am very happy to hear her say how much further the series has to go. Thankyou for the link:)

Thanks SO much for sharing that interview. It's so helpful to know the author's objectives in writing a character and a series.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments You're welcome, ladies. Hopefully her publisher lets her take the series to that point. I think her sales are still strong, She had an author signing event in Houston this past Saturday but I couldn't make it due to a prior family engagement. I did attend one a few years ago. She's very nice in person.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Just finished and loved it. Such a range of emotions reading this. Sweetness, humor, horror, sadness. The book has given me, and the characters, a lot to process.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I'm on hold at library with no idea how many are before me for the three copies they own. Will jump in when I get the book.
