SOLVED. book about a germophobic serial killer; spoilers.

I'd really like to find this and have more info about it then some other books I've posted.

It would have come out either late eighties or more likely nineties about several people tracking a serial killer. I am going to have to list spoilers:

I do not remember any names but remember the killer had a germ fixation/phobia where he would carry cleaning stuff to "purify" his victims. I also remember that one of the main characters..a woman..is either kidnapped or goes on a date with him, not knowing he's the killer and gets abducted. She maybe an assistant or a close friend. Anyway they save her right in the nick of time.

I'm hoping someone can help.

I may have some more information on this book. It maybe one of the J.D. Robb books. I have been looking at them and I am thinking Peabody may have been the kidnapped woman. But there are so many of them! I am not absolutely certain either but the name struck a familiar note. Just wanted to add that in case it helps.
