I picked this book because I needed a banned book for the stairs challenge and I had no idea what it was about. I wasn't expecting to love the book but I do. The book is a series of letters written by Charlie to an anonymous friend as he is starting his first year of high school. As the reader I became the friend Charlie was writing to and I'll miss getting letters from him. Charlie is more an observer of life but he does make some really good friends and has a great English teacher. There is drug use and sex along with some bad things that happen to Charlie and his friends which I assume is why the book has been banned. A few times I wanted to reach into the book and give Charlie a huge hug. A great book that made me feel infinite.

I read this book in middle school and LOVED it. Even after rereading as an adult, it still sticks out as one of my favorites from that age.

I've read this and loved it too. As a librarian, I face challenges on these kinds of books from parents who want us to protect their children from many of the things you mention Rachel. What a shame they don't share the books with these children, read them first and have an open dialogue. Ah well, I loved this one too. I've read many of the "banned" young adult books and usually find them well written and memorable.
