Nick (doily) | 1010 comments Please tell us what you are reading, or are planning to read, in April 2017. Pics, pans, ideas, all are welcome!

message 2: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 1010 comments The Caves of Steel is first up -- a nice, short blockbuster classic, and then I will probably start on In the Night Garden for next month. My past experiences with it tell me it's rewarding, but takes a while.

message 4: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Done with The Collapsing Empire (review here). I'd say wait for sequels in the series are available before starting this one.

I am reading The Shadow Isle (Silver Wyrm, #3) for our Deverry series read, to be followed by Heir to Sevenwaters and Empire of Ivory for another Goodreads group. Then I'm going to read Paladin of Souls, sequel to one of our March books.

message 6: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I just finished Edge of Dark which I enjoyed and highly recommend; I've put in a request at the library for the second book. I've now moved out of genre with No Man's Land

Edge of Dark was really good, wasn't it? I loved it also. I'm currently reading Strange the Dreamer which is good, but long. I'm probably going to read Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day next and then Alliance, the second book in the Linesman trilogy...the first book was surprisingly excellent.

I am reading and enjoying Karavans, and have Child of a Hidden Sea lined up next. Probably The Shadow Isle (Silver Wyrm, #3) after that, if my loan comes in, or I'll continue the Karavans trilogy.

message 9: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Addis I'm rereading the Dragonlance trilogy after a thirty year gap. It's not as bad as I feared, although Tasslehof and the mage Raistlin are carrying a lot of the other characters in terms of my interest levels.

I've been afraid to re-read that - I have such fond memories of the series but after several decades' more exposure to amazing fantasy I think I'll find it trite and formulaic. You're not finding that?

message 11: by Random (last edited Apr 07, 2017 11:11AM) (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1247 comments I've been utterly terrified to reread that series as well. Its hard to believe its been such a time gap. I believe I was in junior high, so it would have been earlish\mid 80s. It came right on the tail of our Pern obsession. :)

A friend and myself were utterly obsessed with it at the time. Though I started loosing interest with some of the additional sub series.

Not reading much of anything right now, or at least anything enjoyable. I'm nose deep in spec sheets, technical docs, and similar.

Jim Mcclanahan (clovis-man) | 485 comments After attending a presentation by the author, Adam Steltzner, I felt compelled to read his book, The Right Kind of Crazy: A True Story of Teamwork, Leadership, and High-Stakes Innovation. My first read of something by an actual rocket scientist. Pared down for the lay reader, it still presents some challenges in understanding. But the internal process of coming up with the "Curiosity" rover is fascinating.

Also re-reading Shakespeare's Planet by Clifford Simak. The memory of my first read of it many years ago only offered up one brief and trivial moment, consisting of Carnivore's greeting: "Welcome to this asshole of a planet". Everything else has disappeared from my brain. Fun to read it again after all these years.

message 13: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Starting Shadow & Claw - intrigued on why Book of the New Sun is often touted as one of the best fantasy series of all time.

Andreas wrote: "Done with The Collapsing Empire (review here). I'd say wait for sequels in the series are available before starting this one."

Good tip.

message 14: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I just finished reading No Man's Land; yet another good read from this author. Now back in genre with The Stars Are Legion

I just finished Karavans, and was planning on starting Child of a Hidden Sea next - but it ended on such a cliffhanger that I'm going to read Deepwood next (and probably finish out the trilogy), then get to Dellamonica afterwards.

message 16: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Just finished The Skill of Our Hands. Second book in the Incrementalist series. It's ok, not as good as book one and the ending was sort of disappointing, but I guess it sort fits in with real life
After some hard decisions I started something older The Immortals

message 17: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I abandoned The Stars Are Legion; when i find myself doing things other than read a book, I generally decide to move on. I had just finished reading a David Baldacci book (he writes a great story) and had A Closed and Common Orbit calling me from my bookshelf

message 18: by Jim (last edited Apr 14, 2017 08:47PM) (new)

Jim Mcclanahan (clovis-man) | 485 comments Currently reading Like Wolves On The Fold. This is a detailed narrative of the 1879 defense of Rorke's Drift by British soldiers as it was under attack from an overwhelming force of Zulu warriors. If anyone has seen "Zulu", the 1964 epic about the same occurrence, you will find that the film version adds a great deal of fictional detail to the account.

message 19: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Finished The Immortals, not what I was expecting but interesting no the less. There was a story in there written in the 50s that is amazing prescient of the American medical conundrum of today.

Started a Doctor Who book
Doctor Who: Casualties of War

I finished the books for my various April group reads and then read the next installment in the Saga of Recluce, Scion of Cyador. Going out of genre next with Move to Strike and maybe one other as yet unchosen book before starting on my group reads for May.

message 22: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Starting The Stars are Legion for next month's pick.

Very fast paced, 30% in a day.

message 23: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I just finished A Closed and Common Orbit which I enjoyed and highly recommend. Now on to Spear of Light

message 24: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments Oh I hope you like Spear of Light :)

I'm reading Hidden Figures: The Untold True Story of Four African-American Women Who Helped Launch Our Nation into Space, which I have to have back at the library next week - it's the book the (excellent) movie was based on. Next up I have Child of a Hidden Sea and The Shadow Isle (Silver Wyrm, #3) for our discussions, and I need to finish the Karavans trilogy.

message 26: by Ken (last edited May 02, 2017 06:32PM) (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Finished Casualties of War, it was a slog to get through.
Started The Last Colony
