Ahoy Mateys! It' a Buddy Read!

I'm kidding! I have work all day tmrw (and no time to sneak read) followed by soccer in the evening, so I doubt I'll get much reading in tomorrow either.

What? What?? WHAT?!?! I knew this was a kinky book, but not that kinky.

So far I'm enjoying it. The author is letting her pirates be murderous, amoral bastards and I LIKE it! So often in M/F, the author makes all the pirates with hearts of gold who drink/fight/steal but would never really hurt or kill someone. But we all know that's BS, so I weirdly like that Tom is a loose cannon and that Balt has killed before (for questionable motives) -- gives 'em some teeth and makes the story far less predictable.
How's it going for you guys?

I agree with all that you said Cat. I am curious to see what else ends up on your pirate shelf. I may be addicted.

Until I realized a corvette was a kind of boat I was totally confused about whether we were in the modern real world or what. Then I just assumed the book was supposed to take place at some random point in the past. But at some point they are looking at a map of the "discovered world." If this was semi-historical that would put us in the 1500s or so, right? (I am asking cuz I don't know) But then the places on the map weren't places I ever heard of so maybe we are in a different world.
I assumed any odd terms or references were due to my own ignorance or the fact that the author may not be American but now I dunno.

From the clues we've been given so far (place names, character names, etc.), I'm fairly certain that this is supposed to be taking place in an alt universe that is ALMOST (but not quite) identical to our own. This allows the author to ground 98% of the story in reality (inventions, foods, clothing, transportation, etc) that we would recognize and relate to, while still allowing him some wiggle room so that he doesn't have to do ALL the research and have the accuracy required of a historical fic book.
I agree with Mish in that the wording of "known world" etc would put it around 1500s in OUR world, but again, due to clothes, inventions, etc. and patterns similar to other historical romances I've read, I'm guessing it's really supposed to be set in our equivalent of the late 17th/early 18th century.
Also, I was good with the "corvette" terminology --Score one for working in a war museum! :D

You're bored!? How far in are you? I can easily see that if hist romances aren't your thing or if fantasy isn't, this might not do it for you.

Oh, go ahead and laugh at the history nerd, Mish. :)

Honestly, Mish... I completely ignore quotes when authors put them at the beginning of chapters like that.

My thing is that the moments that should feel dramatic due to action or characters being deeply emotionally upset about something are reading the same as the author's descriptions of daily chores because EVERY scene has Jon noticing pieces of himself slipping or is pondering about the pieces of Balt's or Tom's personalities.
Did that make ANY sense to you guys?! It's just a little one-note emotionally for me.

And it was too looooong. I am not sure if it was just long for me cuz I like shorter books or if it was, in fact, too long.
This sounds like the start of a review! I will wait to hear what you guys have to say before I make a final judgment.
