Catherine Okay I'm in (as long as no one asked me to swab the decks).

Sandi ♥'s way too many M/M books Ok I'm horrible I totally forgot. :( I am going to try my best to jump in at lunch tomorrow after work I have a hair appt which means no time to read at night. And... its a long one I see . Geez I'm a mess lol

message 5: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine That's okay, Sandi. *sniffle* You don't have to play pirates and wenches with Adam, Mish & I. *sniffle* We'll just have to mentally climb the MCs' crow's nests on our own.

I'm kidding! I have work all day tmrw (and no time to sneak read) followed by soccer in the evening, so I doubt I'll get much reading in tomorrow either.

message 6: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo 11% (view spoiler). That's so Sandi's kinda thing. Maybe it will become mine. Keep an open mind Mishy.

What? What?? WHAT?!?! I knew this was a kinky book, but not that kinky.

message 8: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine AAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK. *flails and runs in the opposite direction* Is is okay if I pretend - when I get to that point - that they are not related?!

message 9: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo 12%. nvm what I said at 11%.

message 10: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine Thanks for the heart attack, Mish! Also, I am very VERY glad you jumped to erroneous conclusions. lol.

message 11: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo I didn't jump. I Jon was lied to. Blatently.

Catherine Hello friends! I didn't get very far yesterday (just 15%), but should have a couple more hours to read tonight.

So far I'm enjoying it. The author is letting her pirates be murderous, amoral bastards and I LIKE it! So often in M/F, the author makes all the pirates with hearts of gold who drink/fight/steal but would never really hurt or kill someone. But we all know that's BS, so I weirdly like that Tom is a loose cannon and that Balt has killed before (for questionable motives) -- gives 'em some teeth and makes the story far less predictable.

How's it going for you guys?

Sandi ♥'s way too many M/M books HA How about I read 3 pages and passed out! Im having a tough time sleeping lately. That mixed with trying to finish the damn Cross and Crown book ( which I will at lunch and jump into Pirates tonight ) Then you will have all my time LOL

message 14: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine Oh phewf! Now I don't feel nearly so guilt, Sandi! ;)

message 15: by Adam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Adam Hah I only got to 12% last night.

message 16: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo Holy crap! I am ahead of the pack on a BR for a change. I am at 43%. I love it but so far no menage or BDSM.

I agree with all that you said Cat. I am curious to see what else ends up on your pirate shelf. I may be addicted.

message 17: by Adam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Adam I was wondering though: is the book set in an alternate world? I'm not entirely sure, but there are odd terms and references used which make me think the setting is in a fictional world.

MishyJo Adam wrote: "I was wondering though: is the book set in an alternate world? I'm not entirely sure, but there are odd terms and references used which make me think the setting is in a fictional world."

Until I realized a corvette was a kind of boat I was totally confused about whether we were in the modern real world or what. Then I just assumed the book was supposed to take place at some random point in the past. But at some point they are looking at a map of the "discovered world." If this was semi-historical that would put us in the 1500s or so, right? (I am asking cuz I don't know) But then the places on the map weren't places I ever heard of so maybe we are in a different world.

I assumed any odd terms or references were due to my own ignorance or the fact that the author may not be American but now I dunno.

Sandi ♥'s way too many M/M books Ill be home in an hour hope to get more into it, and I really hope it picks up because im kinda bored. :(

message 20: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine Okay... So here's my take on the setting/timing of the book:

From the clues we've been given so far (place names, character names, etc.), I'm fairly certain that this is supposed to be taking place in an alt universe that is ALMOST (but not quite) identical to our own. This allows the author to ground 98% of the story in reality (inventions, foods, clothing, transportation, etc) that we would recognize and relate to, while still allowing him some wiggle room so that he doesn't have to do ALL the research and have the accuracy required of a historical fic book.

I agree with Mish in that the wording of "known world" etc would put it around 1500s in OUR world, but again, due to clothes, inventions, etc. and patterns similar to other historical romances I've read, I'm guessing it's really supposed to be set in our equivalent of the late 17th/early 18th century.

Also, I was good with the "corvette" terminology --Score one for working in a war museum! :D

You're bored!? How far in are you? I can easily see that if hist romances aren't your thing or if fantasy isn't, this might not do it for you.

Catherine So.... rethinking the timeline thing because he just mentioned "cormarye" which, when I googled it, shows up as a Medieval dish lending more credence to the 1400-1500s thing.

message 23: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine ...but they're using utensils, and utensils weren't commonly used during the period, so... I think I am destined not to know.

message 24: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo Cat, I am laughing at how hard you are working to figure this out. xox

message 25: by Adam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Adam A lot of little things have been messing with my perception of the time period. Something that keeps bothering me are the slips in to modern language. Like a character might says words or terms that I'm pretty sure would never have been used in 1500s. *shrugs*

message 26: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo Something that annoys me are the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. John LeCarre? Charles Manson? Even if the quotes fit the chapter perfectly, they are so not in sync with the time period portrayed in the book or the world she is creating.

message 27: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine I hear ya, Adam... And there was a time or two where the author used some terminology incorrectly. For instance, at one point, Tom says to Jon "Now be a dove and hold this for me..." (or something along those lines), but I'm fairly certain that the term "dove" wouldn't have been used in that context since dove was a synonym for prostitute in the 19th and 20th centuries (maybe even before, I don't know) and it makes no sense to say "Now be a prostitute, and hold this for me" unless a guy is talking about his dangly bits. lol.

Oh, go ahead and laugh at the history nerd, Mish. :)

Catherine Mishyjo wrote: "Something that annoys me are the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. John LeCarre? Charles Manson? Even if the quotes fit the chapter perfectly, they are so not in sync with the time period..."

Honestly, Mish... I completely ignore quotes when authors put them at the beginning of chapters like that.

message 29: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo Cat, I was gonna use the word "nerd" but I refrained. I was so proud of my self control.

message 30: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine It's okay, lovey (I LURVE when Tom says that), I'm comfortable in my nerd crown.

message 31: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine @38% (view spoiler)

message 32: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine Okay, I'm about to crash. Will probably get to 55%-ish.

message 33: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo 64% I am sitting here doubting that Tom is really (view spoiler). I have been expecting the three of them to come together in a Broken Pieces kinda way and make each other whole. Now I am iffy about that premise.

message 34: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine Mish -- I got to 65% this morning. I was doubtful for a while too, but the more it drags on, the more I wonder. And the more Jon becomes callous, the more worried I am for this book.

message 35: by MishyJo (last edited Jun 11, 2014 10:05AM) (new)

MishyJo It is getting a bit long, isn't it.

message 36: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine Well... I feel like I have been reading forever and not a lot has happened (if I can say that about a book that has (view spoiler)). I think the author probably could have chopped about 50 pages of self-realizations. At the same time, then I wonder if the characters would appear as three-dimensional to me if she had.

My thing is that the moments that should feel dramatic due to action or characters being deeply emotionally upset about something are reading the same as the author's descriptions of daily chores because EVERY scene has Jon noticing pieces of himself slipping or is pondering about the pieces of Balt's or Tom's personalities.

Did that make ANY sense to you guys?! It's just a little one-note emotionally for me.

message 37: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo I agree with all that you said Cat.

message 38: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo Done. There I things I loved about this book. There are things that I hated. It did end up being a bit like (view spoiler). The book was certainly not the kink fest I expected and I think the BDSM elements added very little to the story.

And it was too looooong. I am not sure if it was just long for me cuz I like shorter books or if it was, in fact, too long.

This sounds like the start of a review! I will wait to hear what you guys have to say before I make a final judgment.

message 39: by Adam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Adam Alright, done. I've got mixed feelings for it. I know I'll read the sequel, but more so because I've got a soft spot for Tom than anything else. I'm going to hope like hell that the sequel it isn't as long or tedious as Caged.

message 40: by MishyJo (new)

MishyJo I am posting my review now.

message 41: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine I got sidetracked organizing my beautiful new Paperwhite and am still at 70%. :(
