And the magic has claimed Nevare's father? So maybe Nevare's father sending him away was the magic forcing him to it. I wonder if all the survivors of Speck plague are "taken" by the magic.
And it looks like Soldier's Boy has stirred up a hornet's nest. The Gernians hate over powering Kinrove's fear spell

It so people will take me seriously
ch21-22: that was a brutal turn of events. and even weirder because i have no clue of my loyalties. and it's not like malazan where i'm rooting for both parties, I'm still kind of rooting for none. (so fully there with you alex).
perhaps a wee bit more for the gernians as i didn't want that savage attack to work out (purely because of epiny).

rolemodelling the passive-agressiveness there.
looks like he does not have another choice though.

And the magic has claimed Nevare's fathe..."
Yes, that's still bothering me. The rock i agree must be a valuable mining element that might turn the Gernian attention away from this trading. (or worse, send them to war with Landsing again). The journal i'm sure was meant to be read by Lady Burvelle and go to the queen. Perhaps she will have sympathy for elder trees.
I was surprised about the father being taken by the magic as well. It really is so similar to what happened before: his dad sent him to Dewara so he would stand up for himself, then the magic made the dad emprison his own son in the hope Nevare would stand up for himself and leave. the magic has more Gernian thinking than the Speck might like.
