Anyone have a facebook page that could do with a few likes? Or a twitter adress? I'm always happy to follow fellow indies on twitter :)

Anyway, if anyone has a few minutes to nip over to FB and like my new author page, I'd be really grateful. (and happy to return the favour!)

Let's network! ;)

I'm not on Facebook (officially anyway) but do have a dummy account under a false name which I originally used just to see what FB looks like; so I've liberally sprinkled 'likes' around like confetti with that (and no need for any of you to 'like' it back!).

Do you reckon FB is any use (to us here I mean) by the way?

message 6: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Ironside (julesanneironside) | 653 comments Mod
To be honest I'm not sure Richard. I'll let you know how it goes. Think the idea is to catch people's interest and feed them back towards your website but no idea if it works . Bit of an experiment ...

I'm only just getting started with it, but plan to have it mainly for fans who prefer FB for connecting. It's not my first choice of social media, but I'd rather be accessible. ;)

Same here Jamie. And liked ;)

'Liked' Jamie.

What I don't quite understand is: what's to stop everybody here on Goodreads doing the same thing - everybody 'liking' everybody (and everything) else, billions of 'likes' flying back and forth and completely clogging the system?

message 10: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Ironside (julesanneironside) | 653 comments Mod
I suppose they could, Richard. However not everyone is as generous and lovely as the members of this group so we're probably safe from clogged systems. I'll be honest, I only 'Like' a page if I actually like it. I was safe starting this thread here since I already liked and wanted to support the people I've spoken too ;)

Jim | 110 comments What I'd like to see is how other people used their facebook pages.
This is the page I've created for Tsarina

https://www.facebook.com/TsarinaSector

Obviously feel free to like it, but I'd also be interested to see what other people are doing and other off the wall ideas

message 12: by Richard (new)

'Liked' it Jim.

Just one question though: one of the photographs (taken from a ferry and showing three, um, quadrupeds strolling along a riverbank) appears to include a living unicorn. Did you take this picture yourself?

I like to claim that all pictures are sent to me by Haldar, or taken by those tourists who've taken us up on the fabulous free holiday offer.

In a facebook discussion somebody did comment and I checked with Haldar. It seems that way back somebody did a genetic modification which seemed good to them at the time, and on some worlds there are horses which show that particular feature :-)

And 'liked' - that is a very cool page, Jim. I feel like I need to up my game...

message 15: by Jim (new)

Jim | 110 comments Well I felt I needed to provide readers with something other than stuff saying 'How wonderful I am'

Ideally they like the book, but if they like the book there's no reason for them to be particularly interested in me, so there's not a lot of me on the page, in fact I'm never mentioned.

That is a great page and I have duly 'liked' it - I think using pictures is a great way to make the page engaging... I tend to post up links to my blogs, other interesting blogs, updates from my book and general stuff, but I think pictures might be the way to go!

www.facebook.com/GarryAbbottAuthor - if you want to check mine out.

Shame most of my stories are set in future worlds though... might be hard to get pictures.

message 17: by Jim (new)

Jim | 110 comments Well Tsarina is quite literally at the edge of the galaxy and is set well in the future.
But it's amazing what you see that might be relevant, think how fashions come round in cycles.

What I really need is a competent artist or at least somebody who can do nice pencil sketches

Ah! I see - My eyes had been drawn to the real world pictures, but I've just gone back and looked closer and I can see that you are building up a 'picture' of Tsarina from all sorts of sources. That's very cool. Well done.

Michael Scoins (michael_scoins) | 5 comments Hey there!

Great to see so much support here.

Here's the Facebook page for my first book:

I generally post links to my blog posts on

http://www.michaelscoinsauthor.com/blog but as I'll have a new book coming out in a few months there'll probably be more material on that!

That's what I've tried to do. Whenever I come across anything that might be appropriate, I've even got friends who send me pictures :-)

Matthew Willis | 258 comments I've given my page a bit of a facelift since I put the link up, and finally got around to using the logo Fireship bought for me when Daedalus was published. What does everyone think?

By the way JA, is it worth setting up a similar thread for external blogs?

message 30: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Ironside (julesanneironside) | 653 comments Mod
Not a bad idea, Matt. I've got my blog details on my page (GR and FB) but worth another thread I think. Love reading about how other people go about the process of writing.

Turhan Halil | 270 comments K, here's my F,book ... https://www.facebook.com/turhan.halil...

My Twitter is ... https://twitter.com/DLTDEYH

aaaaand my Wordpress blog/book review is http://www.indiebookblurb.com/

Just gotta mention this guys ... All my social media sites are pretty much devoid of content. I've really not been active with Facebook or Twitter but it would be nice to exchange 'likes' with ya'll and connect witcha :) My Wordpress site which is an absolute fledgling is something that I'm going to keep working on and at some point I'll be reviewing Fantasy/Paranormal etc books there, but I'm not quite ready to do that yet. I just started to load some reviews onto it that I'd done in the past, so it's an evolutionary process, but I'm determined to make it a place where indie authors can turn to, to get your books reviewed for free.

TIA for all your likes, and as soon as I can, I'll get back to this thread and 'like' your pages. For the Mo, real life beckons :)

Hello,
I am happy to like and support like minded authors, so I have liked all of those listed above that I was able to. Two were personal pages, so I apologize, since I don't have a private Facebook, I don't have the option of friend requesting. (Which is kind of sad/funny because the page manager app will tell me to invite friends to like my page, but when I click, it tells me I have no friends.)
Anyone interested, please feel free to check out my page:
http://facebook.com/mcmullenwrites
I am curious though, whether or not you see that I have liked your page or you only see the page count go up. I get mystery likes from time to time and it drives me crazy. I want to know who likes me! :)

I know exactly what you mean about mystery likes, Christina!

I think I'm up to date with everyone but if I missed you let me know.

Btw my twitter is https://twitter.com/J_AnneIronside I review books and sometimes say something funny. Always happy to retweet on info about books I've enjoyed especially for fellow Indies :)

I am the absolute worst on Twitter. I break the cardinal rule and just autofeed from Facebook. I do try and interact with folks, but the stream of info is insane. I like the list feature because I can separate people from the spam bots.

I didn't even know there was an autofeed feature... :/

BUT THOSE PESKY SPAM BOTS.

They make it hard for me to want to get into Twitter...

Yes, I got caught out once and my account was hacked. It's never happened since. It just means checking out someone is legit before following back. I haven't had any other problems.

I don't get Twitter either. Most of the posts looks like gibberish to me. :/ Yet so many people use it, I'm making an effort to try to understand it. (Doesn't work too well though.)

message 44: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) | 1213 comments Mod
Someone needs to do a tutorial on using Twitter. Not how to get more followers, not how and when to spam out your work, but a genuine tutorial on how long winded author types are supposed to effectively communicate in less than 140 characters. I may be willing to pay money for that. Monopoly money, mind you, but money nevertheless.

message 45: by Kara (new)

Kara Jorgensen (karajorgensen) | 97 comments I just post random things about what I'm doing or working on and end with writing or author hash tags like #amwriting or #indieauthor or #writerproblems

message 46: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Witzens (tammywitzens) | 26 comments I'm pretty sure Twitter is just full of robots. It's like a bot's paradise! The hashtag? That's like a trendybot's Starbucks.

Only a robot can say something "meaningful" in 140 characters.

Wait... you guys aren't robots, are you? It's cool if you are- I don't judge....

message 47: by Douglas (new)

Douglas (pegamooseg) | 32 comments Christina is the one who recommended this group to me (Many thanks, Christina!).

Here is the link to my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Checke...

I have the list of other Facebook links that I will go through and add. If you one of those mega-posters who posts several times an hour, I may not like your page, or if I do, I'll mute it. I'm not too particularly fond of people who flood my page. No offense, there are members of my own family I don't find that interesting either. :)

This is how I learned to work my social media...
I post project updates, perspectives on this or that subject, etc. to my blog. My blog is shared to Twitter, which is shared to Facebook. I post quick things to Twitter and sometimes pictures. So, if you follow me, Facebook receives the most details of my posts because of the linkage. However, I am much more active in the communities on Google+. I post semi-regularly on the others, but I like meeting new people and discussing various things with random strangers on Google+.

Anyway... It's wonderful to meet ya'll.

:) I thought you would fit in here, Doug. Go to the just lurking thread if you want to know why.

message 49: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Pike (pikeknight) | 8 comments I just made a run through here and liked everyone's FB page. Here's mine: https://www.facebook.com/danielpikekn...

If you follow me on Twitter at @pikeknight, I will follow back.

In addition, I think I can answer some of the social media questions being tossed around, but the answers are somewhat bleak in terms of what you can actually do with Facebook these days.

Twitter is a better tool, but you have to know what to hashtag and have an audience that actually cares about what you're tweeting (which is tough). The next time you tweet something about your writing, try #IARTG and either #AMREADING if the book is published already or #AMWRITING if not. These seem to work a lot better than hashtagging the genre.

message 50: by Douglas (new)

Douglas (pegamooseg) | 32 comments Thanks for the suggestions, Daniel. I've followed you on Twitter.

I use the same hashtags consistently for my projects (when I remember), mainly so I can easily look up something later more than someone else trying to find it. Other hashtags I use are random, but relate to the post. For example, I posted something the other day about photobombing someone with the hashtag "#WhereIsWaldo". A friend of mine works in the social media industry, and tosses me nuggets every now and then. He's big into following others who follow you, because it expands that circle of reach. He also says to put a hashtag on every tweet, which also expands the reach. Also, he says promoting someone or something via social media can be a full time job. I actually know people who do that for a living for an ad agency.

Also, I have TweetDeck, but I have yet to figure out how to use it effectively enough.
