Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I'll have a look when I'm back at the laptop. To be honest I could do with some help with mine too. No *^{^} idea!

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Kindle Crime, Thriller & Mystery/English has 3k in it. It's about the smallest category I can see, but if I had a clue what I was doing, I might be able to find more.

I wish I was more help...I have found that I loose visibility the longer one of my books has been out. I looked at my categories and struggled trying to find a new approach. I will think on yours though and let you know if I come up with anything.

message 4: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Crime, Thriller & Mystery/Action and Adventure has 198 books in it.

message 5: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I think with mine I'm stuck with Erotica/sci-fi with 6k other books.

Yeah I hear ya.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Under Kindle ebooks for instance on the left of Amazon it lists what I'm assuming is the number books in each section in brackets.

Crime, Thriller & Mystery 300k under that I'm seeing different categories now (don't know why) British Detectives 7k

message 8: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments You're welcome. Glad I could help with something. I'm pretty clueless about mine. I think I'm stuck with competition in a very niche market of 6k.

message 9: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) I'll do a search using KDP Rocket and see what I come up with for you.

message 10: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I saw that about lesbian detectives! You'll have to write one, then by the time it's ready you'll find that there are 6k books in the damn category!

They are quite big. But I'm not sure what the answer is to that.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I need to keep a list of places I've looked into that will and won't have anything to do with erotica. I can't remember about bargain booksy.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Alex wrote: "It's so unfair that some people won't promote erotica, I don't see why not after the success of 50 Shades. I have no problem with putting Erotica titles on my blog, the exposure is limited now but I don't discriminate."

It's daft. But then again sex has only just been invented with the publication of Fifty Shades...no wait...

If I'd kept it to around two sex scenes I could market it as just Sci-Fi and the sex scenes would be merely known as "the good bits" and I could throw it out everywhere.

I will persevere, there's a list of places I need to go through. I've sent out half a dozen blog review request thingies this week already.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments My view is that most of them will ignore me anyway, but at least I'll have ticked that box.

How can anybody ignore someone with a wicked sense of humor and violet hair???

Well that's what I think, but some people are ignorant so what are you gonna do? lol

Justin (justinbienvenue) I looked up the keyword British detective and I got two decent hits. Under "British detective novels" the average competition is around 2,234 with 40 Google searches a month and 4,866 Amazon searches a month and the competitive score is 61 which is good. So it would be a decent keyword to try.

"British detective series" is a bit higher with around 5,247 competitors, 880 Google searches a month and 2,028 Amazon searches a month with a score of 46 which is also good. If your book is a part of a series then using British detective series is a good keyword to use.

Small town was too vague to come up with anything.

Kidnapping as a keyword has two solid keywords, "kidnapping story" and "kidnapping the enemy". Kidnapping story has a small competition with 70 Google searches, 380 Amazon searches a month and the competitive score is 54 which is good, it means you have a good chance at being seen with that keyword if your book is good. Kidnapping the enemy may not be what your book is about but it had similar results to kidnapping story.

Mysteries & Detective is best left as is as a Category because using it as a keyword would get you no where. There's way too many competitors and while the searches are decent you'd just get lost in the shuffle so keeping it as a category would be best.

message 19: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments You've probably got to have Mystery & Detective as a category I would think Alex. But you're right the other ones as key words would probably be the way to go. (I think-not that I know anything at this stage!)

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I need to check on mine. No idea what I've put down as keywords. I probably cocked up and put "gardening" or something.

message 21: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Agreed.

message 22: by Matt (new)

Matt Cowper | 56 comments Don't think anyone's mentioned this: you can always email Amazon and ask for your book to be placed in certain browse categories. They're very obliging, in my experience. Unless you know the special recipe to throw into your book's categories/keywords section, this is the easiest way to get into some of the less competitive browse categories.

L.E. Doggett (ldwriter2) | 53 comments Hmm On another forum someone stated that using author names as keywords was suppose to be good. Obvious writers in the same genre.

I hadn't heard that before.

Carole P. Roman | 4665 comments Mod
That's great info Matt. Thanks

message 25: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I'm messing around with my categories now.

I'm thinking:

Fiction/Romance/Erotica
Fiction/Science Fiction/Space Opera

Clutching at straws with the Key words of

Genetic Modification
Science Fiction Adventure
Science Fiction & Fantasy
Thriller
Science Fiction Romance

Need two more. Not sure if any of that fits.

That is a good idea for Amazon Ads (should you wish to donate to Amazon!) but I'm not sure how it would work in the genre section on your book's page.

I have two that are like Poldark and in the last year or two Poldark has become very popular because of the TV series. But how would my book look in the genre chart?

Fiction>Romance> Historical>Winston Graham

Yet, L.E, it can work wonders if you get on his Also Boughts - which I can't!!!!

Or am I missing something? Did they say more, L.E?

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I've got this far:

Fiction/Romance/Erotica
Fiction/Science Fiction/Space Opera

Clutching at straws with the Key words of

Genetic Modification
Science Fiction Adventure
Science Fiction & Fantasy
Thriller
Science Fiction Romance
MM
MF

So much straw clutching.

kwfinder.com is a good website for keyword research - though you can only search three times per day unless you pay for a plan.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I didn't know that. Thank you.
