ABANDONED. Children's book involves a child looking through a very small piece of purple stained glass in a front door. Through the glass they see everything in purple. They see a purple creature and can only see it through that piece of purple glass.

Maybe Enchanted Glass by Diana Wynne Jones? Andrew Hope inherits a house with a stained glass window in the door. He doesn't remember that the place is magic. A young boy named Aidan shows looking for help, as some men are causing him. When Aidan looks through the colored bits of glass, each color show different magical views of the outside. One is definitely purple.

Enchanted Glass wasn't pubbed until 2010, so it can't be that.
It sounds a little like The Man Upstairs by Ray Bradbury, but no one would ever call that a "lovely children's story"!
I seem to remember one of the Lois Lowry books about Anastasia Krupnik's brother Sam had some kind of reference to a stained glass window or cupboard door. Possibly All About Sam?
Is it Tales of Monsters and Beasties by Jane Launchbury? It’s a collection and one of the stories is about a kid who looks out through a stained glass doorway!
Not sure if you're still looking for this, but possibly The Mansion in the Mist by John Bellairs? First published 1992, so within your time frame. There's a purple windowpane, and when starlight shines through it a magical chest / trunk appears, which is a portal to another world.

I would love to know what this book is. I remember enjoying it so much and I keep thinking back to it.
