Aneta (anetaj) Hi, I was wondering what's everyones opinion. I have Kindle 5th generation - old but working fine. I'm using it only for books (no audiobooks, no web browsing, etc - I have tablet for that). I'm thinking about upgrading my kindle to the newer version. I'm rather no fuss with my Kindle - but is it worth (real difference) to have paper white? Any comments / recommendations are appreciated.

YouKneeK Hi Aneta. It may depend on how much you use it and how tight your budget is, but I do really think the front-lighting technology improves the (already good) Kindle experience. I had the 2nd generation PaperWhite and was very happy with it. I tend to shift positions a lot while I read, so I would often cast shadows on my book/e-reader as I moved around and blocked light from lamps or windows. It was nice to have a light that “followed” my reader wherever it went and could be easily adjusted to different brightness levels.

I’m currently using the Oasis (also front-lit) which is my favorite of all the models I've owned (original, Kindle Keyboard, Paperwhite II, and Voyage). The main thing I like about it is simply the shape. It has a weird shape that puts the weight more toward the part you hold in your hand. If you switch hands, the screen flips automatically so you can enjoy the same experience regardless of which hand you hold it in. I think it isn’t really all that much lighter than the other models, but it feels a lot lighter because of the way the weight is distributed. It’s also, in combination with the physical buttons, a lot easier and more comfortable to hold and operate one handed. (Leaving the other hand free to pet the cat, sip a beverage, shake your fist in the air at stupid characters, hold a blanket up under your chin, etc.) The Oasis is the more expensive model though, so the cost difference might not be worth it to you. The PaperWhite is still a great model.

Trio | 13 comments I love my new Kindle 10, I do like the red light feature and it is super fast, but best of all it is really easy to organize files (docs) since I purchase so many things from non Amazon sources. They've made it very user friendly.

Tobias Langhoff (tobiasvl) | 50 comments Trio, I think Aneta is asking about the e-readers, not the Kindle Fire line (which are basically tablets).

I love my Paperwhite. The frontlight is indispensable, both in darkness (obviously) but also in daylight, where it really helps the contrast. Also, I forget: Does the 5th gen Kindle have Goodreads integration like the more recent models?

Kristie | 17 comments I love my Kindle Voyage. I bought it for the lighting (going from a basic Kindle), and it's night and day. (I was going to be on a lot of trains in Europe, so I wanted to be sure I could see it in whatever lighting I was in. I believe the Voyage might be the only one that automatically adjusts the lighting level to the light where you are, but don't quote me on that.

My husband upgraded from an old Kindle to the Oasis recently, and he loves it.

Again, it's a nice to do, not a must do, but you would likely not regret the decision. Much more user friendly having the touch screens and better interface, no question.

Good luck!

LocalPeanut | 16 comments I like the Oasis too because sometimes it takes me several tries to turn the page using the swipe thing. And by then I have sauced my Kindle with garlic sauce . . . which isn't something I'd recommend in public transportation.

Eric Westfall (eawestfall) | 105 comments Personally, I got hooked on Voyage. Good light control. Easy to carry. An inexpensive case that makes it look/feel like a book.

I rarely have a problem with swiping (keeping my garlic saucy right hand for eating and my left hand for Kindle assistance), but the Voyage has a bar (page forward) and a button (page back) in the margin, which also works well.

Voyage is also less expensive than Oasis, and I've never been able to convince myself that spending that much money to try a new product with an admittedly odd shape requiring me to learn an basically entirely new way to handle my ebook reader, was worth it.

Just my USD .02.

Eric

I'm also very happy with my Voyage, which also lives in an inexpensive case that makes it look like a book!

The solution to the swipe problem, at least on the Voyage, is the presence of small pressure points on either side of the screen. You can actually squeeze these -- very gently, though the level of pressure can be set -- to turn pages back & forth.

I lived with a 2nd gen Kindle until it threatened to die on me during an international flight, so this was a wonderful upgrade.

W. Frazier | 20 comments Hi-- I used the basic Kindle then updated to a Paperwhite. I love being able to walk into any room and not even think about a light source. Many a times I have read my day away into night and ended up reading in a dark room. Paperwhite makes it so easy. It's super outside in bright sunny conditions as well (think beach reading). On the technical side the new Paperwhite automatically lists your entire Amazon library. (It brings up all of your titles and then you tap the title to download) It also connects with Goodreads and on your library page you can pull up your "want to reads". Also the Whispersync function will let you stay on the right page if you are doing audible or using your computer to read as well. Love the dictionary function. The new Paperwhites seem smaller and lighter and faster Not sure which upgrades came when. Good luck in decision-making!

W. Frazier | 20 comments P.S. I just tracked the pricing for the Paperwhite on camelcamelcamel.com. Amazon regularly puts the Paperwhite on sale for $99.99. The $89.99 price point is the lowest I've seen.

message 13: by Nell (new)

Nell I upgraded to the Kindle Voyage a couple of years ago and am very pleased with it. One thing I noticed with the Oasis is that is it right-handed. As a left handed person, I like having page turn devices on both sides of the Voyage,

YouKneeK Nell wrote: "One thing I noticed with the Oasis is that is it right-handed. As a left handed person, I like having page turn devices on both sides of the Voyage,"

The Oasis isn’t right-handed. It feels and functions exactly the same in both hands.

You hold the thicker side, in whichever hand you want. If you flip it over to hold it in your left hand then the screen automatically flips so that it’s still right-side-up. The buttons also work correctly in both directions. If you have it configured so that the top button is page forward, then the top button works the same way regardless of which way it’s flipped.

I'm right-handed, but I hold it in my left hand more often than not.

message 18: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK Regarding my previous post, I found a video that demonstrates it better than my attempt to explain in words. Throughout the video he holds it in both hands at different times, but he specifically calls out and demonstrates switching hands at around the 1:25 mark.

Just keep in mind the video is about a year old so its price discussion is probably outdated.

stormhawk | 542 comments I continue to chug along quite nicely on my Kindle 3 (now the Kindle Keyboard). It still works and I still use it. So does my Kindle 1, for that matter, but the shorter battery life and specialized charger is an issue.
