2018–19 Korean peace process https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018%E2...
The 2018–19 Korean peace process was initiated in order to resolve the long-term Korean conflict and denuclearize the Korean peninsula. International concern about North Korea's nuclear weapons came to a head in 2017. A series of summits were held between North Korea's Kim Jong-un, South Korea's Moon Jae-in, and Donald Trump of the United States. Trump became the first sitting US President to meet a North Korean leader. Moon became the first South Korean President give a speech in North Korea. In parallel to this, a number of cultural exchanges began.

James Morcan | 11380 comments North Korea is the only country in the world that still tests nuclear weapons, and their tests have caused escalating tensions between them and the United States. Their most recent nuclear test was on September 3, 2017.

Ian Miller | 1422 comments You probably need so many tests to be sure they work, and while the first test is to show you have the principles right, you need more to be sure deliverable ones work. The US has tested more than most.

(CNN)A top adviser to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that Pyongyang will not engage in the type of talks seen last year, when Kim met with US President Donald Trump in Hanoi, despite the rapport the two leaders have developed.

Ian Miller | 1422 comments He probably won't meet because at the next meeting he will be expected to do something he doesn't want to do. Added to which, playing hard to get may drag this out until election fever takes over. These talks have the problem that neither side is prepared to offer anything of substance.

He(Kim) might be factoring in the current Iran situation and up coming U.S. elections dominating Trump's mind and priorities to the point he thinks The Donald can't afford North Korea to add more problems, putting 'The Glorious One' in a favorable position to excise more concessions from the U.S.

NK are notorious for 'timing their hand'.

Mat | 2 comments In Japan, people are also saying that Kim is terrified about making high-profile public appearances in light of the assassination of Iranian military leader Qassam Soleimani. Kim is reported to have increased the number of 'doubles' posing as him.

Ian Miller | 1422 comments Terrified, or taking sensible precautions? If Trump is prepared to assassinate one leader, why not a more troublesome one?

message 66: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 13, 2020 11:33PM) (new)

Can't see that happening unless it gets out of hand and even then I doubt that would be a choice.

If Kim was to be suddenly deep-sixed with a bullet or a drone the power vacuum would pose issues for a number of big players.

China would face a potential refugee crisis on its border, lose a cheap labour base and a useful proxy; South Korea would face similar refugee issues and possibly more likely to incur the expense of a reunification bill.

The killing of a leader by assassination would on a global basis void a tacit agreement between world leaders and even put Trump at risk.

C'mon Iain, put yer spy hat on!

How about if a CIA mole on the inside in Pyongyang leaves a banana peel near a large flight of stairs...then the honorable supreme leader goes for a tumble...that ain't assassination, at least not one that's traceable!

Ian, you've just solved this entire thread!

How can North Korea ever be turned into a democratic nation?

CUT OFF THE HEAD OF THE SNAKE!

p.s. With this mindset you have, you could fit in nicely in any top intelligence agency...

Ian Miller | 1422 comments Ha, James, 0.007 comes out of the closet :-)

I am not convinced cutting off the head of the snake would do much good. Like the Hydra, three more would sprout up and take its place

Lance Morcan | 3058 comments Returning to this thread's original question... "Is North Korea a genuine threat to world peace? Or is it an exaggerated threat?"...

Given any action against North Korea would be answered a hundredfold by China, I guess you'd have to say it (NK) is a genuine threat. (I view it as a province of China, not an independent nation).

Lurking behind the continuing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, Russia, North Korea et al is the ever-present specter of China. That's where the next world war will be fought I suspect.

It's not as clear cut though. There was internal disputes between Kim and China, and even talk of China looking to replace him as he wasn't "playing ball". I think they pulled him back into line since then.

"Lurking behind the continuing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, Russia, North Korea et al is the ever-present specter of China. That's where the next world war will be fought I suspect."

I suspect that it is 1930 all over again(minus the ideological / religosio slant). Where China lacks is 'power projection" and "war experience".

The Nazi's by the time they acquired power, had leaders who were former soldiers with vast experience in their ranks and also prepared the youth for war in advance(Nazi Youth).

I think China is gonna try the long game and project power and influence via economic and soft power means, but that a skirmish in the South China Sea might be the catalyst to war before they achieve their goal?

There's an interesting discussion on this by Graham Alison

Should do a movie on that?

But then again, when you look at some of the war movies of late they're actually worse than the massacres itself . . . .

Me too.

Favorite part is Tom Hardy being led away in manacles to be interrogated by the SS either that or Harry Styles being nearly sunk by a German U-boat.

Great stuff.
