The Writing Process > The difference between, “Let’s eat, Grandma.” and “Let’s eat Grandma.” Is important…especially to Grandma.

Am I doing this right? “I have to do everything right if I want to be a famous writer!”

Self-publishing is the new wild west. The only hard and fast rule I have come across is, “There are no hard and fast rules.”

hahah, funny. However, they will flay you alive if you don't follow grammar rules. I use a beta and a couple of editors and we all still miss stuff.

Annabelle Costa | 45 comments I recently read a book on Amazon that was a best seller in thrillers with over 100 positive reviews and very few negative reviews, and the complete lack of commas was startling to me. The person made the grandma mistake over and over and over. And not one reviewer pointed it out. It made me wonder if I was going crazy or something.

(it was actually a very good book, commas aside.)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments A very good writing friend, who came to writing via acting, told me he likes to read books where the punctuation would help him with acting it. I bear that in mind when I'm writing.

May I ask what the name of the thriller was?

message 20: by Annabelle (new)

Annabelle Costa | 45 comments It was called "Remember Me" by Lynda Renham.

While I'm a stickler for good grammar, I think most readers don't know the rules or don't care. If there are grammar mistakes, I'm totally thrown from the story. I can't help but read as a writer.
