I think the rock was his special rock which he ended up giving to Caulder. I'm guessing the book is his journal. He didn't pass it on to his father or uncle so he "kept" it that way - but he "left" it with Epiny/Spink. Both things were part of his old life.

Alex wrote: "But why were those things that the magic wanted him to do? What were the important tasks?"

I think that stuff has yet to play out. The Rock is obviously some valuable mineral which is why Caulder's father (or was it uncle?) is so interested in it and has started digging around the Burvelle property looking for samples I'm guessing. Maybe the magic is trying to generate a distraction, or perhaps even a civil war based on mining rights? I don't know.

And the journal? Maybe "kept" means him writing about his "Speck" experience - and "left" -maybe the magic wants it to fall into sympathetic hands - maybe the Queen's? And so have someone who understands the problem and can help?

Ch 20 - I like how the chapter ends with Nevare coming out of the forest. Things are about to hit the fan

until ch20 - looks like there's finally something happening, and immediately very large scale. i hope epiny got the message through somehow and is taking amzil and all the children on a little 'daytrip'. i guess spink will not want to leave.


I totally blanked on the rock thing, but it has to be the rock he gave to caulder indeed. Nevare liked that rock so it was weird for him to give it away. Knowing now that Soldier Boy gave it away for the magic is interesting indeed. Might be a good diversion, but still, why?
