After putting myself through the emotional meat grinder of Golden Son once more, an idea began to form in the back of my mind. Pierce Brown confirmed in a q&a session a while back that Tactus and others are canonically bisexual (Victra, Roque, and Cassius were the only other examples he gave by name). Knowing that, some of Tactus’ lines in Red Rising and his last scenes in Golden Son are starting to make me wonder if Tactus developed an unrequited crush on Darrow over the course of the first 2 books.
Reading Tactus’ final scene in Golden Son with the knowledge that he was bisexual added a whole extra layer of meaning to that scene. Seeing just how badly Tactus wanted to be back in Darrow’s circle of friends, how desperate he was for Darrow’s approval took on an entirely different context now. After reading Golden Son again with the knowledge of Tactus’ sexuality, I’m starting to be convinced that in that moment, Tactus was trying to express his feelings for Darrow.
Tactus definitely had feelings for Darrow and it's possible he was bisexual. The bit where we found out he was practicing his violin to play for Darrow was heartbreaking. But he could also just admire Darrow and love him like a brother. You can love someone without being sexually attracted to them.
It could be either one, honestly. There was just something in that scene that gave me the impression that Tactus might have been attracted to Darrow, and I wanted to see if anyone else got that same feeling.
That is actually plausible. And that idea crossed my mind once or twice while I was reading Golden Son. But not really to the extent of him being "IN LOVE" with Darrow but sort of liking him romantically. :)
I hadn't thought of Tactus' bisexuality during my first read. It was more respect/admiration or disappointment in himself for letting Darrow down. During my second read, and after the PB interview, I looked at it in a new light. I then thought it was possible. I've mentioned before in another thread that Tactus was a favorite character of mine. The whipping Darrow took for Tactus made me stand up and take notice, as it did for Tactus, no doubt. I think his bluster and nonchalance was all a cover for deep down feelings of inadequacy Tactus felt. About his sexuality? Perhaps. In the end, Tactus felt remorse, dishonor for betraying Darrow and maybe romantic feeling too? Perhaps. Regardless, he had feelings for Darrow romantic or otherwise. It's left ambiguous for the reader to decide.
I felt Tactus admired Darrow. Often times someone will hero worship an idol. I thought of it like in college or high school when there is the A+ student who is also someone of a rebel. Often times other students want to be like that student. I did not find it to be sexual nature in the novel. If We are going to view it from that lens it does change the for me. I like my original thought that was not based on sexuality. Just friendship and support. I think most people want to be included and a part of the team or group or clique. If anything, maybe we should consider he was a little depressed and lonely.
