Toby/i

I have just started reading {well audiobooks} Sherlock for the first time, I have seen the Rathbone/Bruce films hundreds of times, one character, among others I found missing is Toby/i {unsure of spelling}. I don't get why they would not put him in any of the films?? I love his character.
