ABANDONED. Missing father - expected home but did not show up, family thinks he abandoned them. SPOILER ahead...

This book was about a man who was expected home but did not show up. His family thought he had abandoned them, but he was in a sledding accident on his way home, and he had a head injury that rendered him child-like. A woman took him into her home to live as her companion for years. Eventually his daughter tracks him down, and takes him home to live with her.

I can't remember precisely, but I think I read it about 8 to 10 years ago. It was a fiction book. It was a modern day setting, and I think it was set in Minnesota or Wisconsin - a state where there is snow, so a sledding accident was plausible.

Can you tell us more about her father - his job, age, skills/interests, personality before the accident, etc.?

Is this a mystery and you discover his whereabouts well into the book?

I can't remember his job, although I think he was professional like lawyer or accountant. Early middle age. Not a mystery. A novel. You don't find out what happened to him until well into the book. Pretty much near the end.
