Tash Dahling (misstash) | 79 comments Some novels are just hit and miss I think. Cell for me was a giant miss. The first half started off ok, but then the second really seemed to lose momentum. SK is such a prolific writer and has written some of the greatest books of his time - The Stand, The Talisman, 11/22/63. But Cell is just not one of them. He does have a history of taking objects from our lives and turning them against us, for example The Mangler and Trucks. Both fabulous short stories. And perhaps that's what Cell needed to be? A fab short story.
And I think both King and Cormac Macarthy write beyond anything any of us can ever aspire to.
The Road is greatness and one of the finest pieces of modern literature ever written, and that's not compared to Cell or anything else. It just is.

Squire (srboone) | 92 comments Cell was a miss for me as well, but I liked the ending. (I'm trying here, now.) (view spoiler)

It worked! (the spoiler tags, that is...)

Novia (novroz) | 76 comments this is one of my favorit King's books.
I wish they make it into a movie

message 155: by Jeff (new) - rated it 1 star

Jeff (jefffackler) | 2 comments Cell: There's a crap for that.

King's worst book by far, and I say that as someone who would give most of the King books I've read 3 to 5 stars. This book is an embarassment to phoning it in. *rimshot*

I checked it out of the library and still wanted my money back.

message 156: by Cheryl (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cheryl Hall | 26 comments I wasn't too keen on this one.

I read 2/3 of it and set it aside out of boredom. I didn't finish it until about an year later.

Not a dreadful book, but far from King's best work.

message 157: by Terri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Terri Edwards (teresaluvsbooks) | 149 comments Starting Cell soon. Wow, seeing a lot of mixed reviews on this one. Some love it, some hate it. I go with King because of his ability to tell a story and draw you in; hopefully that will be enough to keep me interested in it.

message 158: by E. (new) - rated it 4 stars

E. | 242 comments Teresa I saw that with Lisey's Story. It was on the list of "least favorite" and had generally bad reviews. Joyland also. I ended up really liking them both.
I think it's because they don't have monsters or aren't typical "horror", and that's what people expect going into it. But you're right, King's writing is the thing that keeps me coming back to him.
I'll be picking up Cell soon, I hope you like it. Post back here and let us know.

message 159: by Terri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Terri Edwards (teresaluvsbooks) | 149 comments Thanks for the input, E! I don't need to have horror when I read King now. I used to expect it 30 years ago, and it's the reason I strayed from him for about 20 years, he seemed to get away from it. But I reread The Stand over the summer, and I was reminded of just how awesome an author he is. I'm playing catch-up now :) His books make me feel like I've come home.

message 160: by CJ (new) - rated it 3 stars

CJ (chefcjlong) I know there have been a over abundance of zombie movies as of late.....But this is one of Sai King's books that I wish they would just get on and make into a movie!!....I love the way it's written...You can picture it all happening and for some reason John Cusack is the one I see playing the main character....Let the bashing begin....I didn't like it as a book but I think it would make a great movie!!

I know of that but there are also how many of Sai Kings books they have said they are going to make into movies that fall through....The Dark Tower and Ron Howard to be exact...lol

Terri Edwards (teresaluvsbooks) | 149 comments Okay, got started and made it to Chapter 3. Looks like it's going to be a gory ride. Someone please tell me there's more to it than that. My husband said it reminded him a little of Desperation, which I thought was okay, but very gory. Not so much into the gore in my old age :) I'm hoping his story telling abilities are enough to keep me going.

Checkman Teresa wrote: "Okay, got started and made it to Chapter 3. Looks like it's going to be a gory ride. Someone please tell me there's more to it than that. My husband said it reminded him a little of Desperation,..."

No there's a lot of gore and violence throughout the novel. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I've gotten a little further in, still not too bad and, as I had hoped, his writing has kept me hooked.

message 167: by Danielle (new) - added it

Danielle | 57 comments I finished this recently. I enjoyed the pace, there were some parts that were really disturbing though.

message 168: by John (new) - rated it 3 stars

John I am roughly halfway through this at the moment and I have to say that it is arguably the weakest King novel I have read to date.

One thing I have always loved about King is that he makes me care about his characters. To be perfectly frank, if any of the three get mullered in the next chapter I genuinely wouldn't give a damn.

I really hope that it picks up in the 2nd half.

message 169: by Doreen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doreen Petersen | 252 comments I just started reading the during the last week and so far I'm loving it. Has so many twists and turns to keep me addicted to reading it to find out how it ends.

message 171: by Erin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Erin (ems84) | 2659 comments It's a good book. I tried watching the movie last night and it just didn't compare.

message 172: by Nancy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nancy (paper_addict) | 941 comments Another movie that doesn't compare to the book. So annoying.

Kandice | 4387 comments I don't have any interest in the movie despite loving the actors because it feels like one that will look cheezy on film. I think King works because he paints such a perfect mental picture, but you just can't SEE it in reality or it falls apart.

message 174: by Nancy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nancy (paper_addict) | 941 comments Yes, his books are always difficult to adapt to film. So much goes on inside your head that doesn't translate to the TV or film

message 175: by Doreen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doreen Petersen | 252 comments I just finished the book and loved. The way the book ended leaves room for a possible sequel I think. I agree about the movie. Was nothing like the book.

message 176: by Erin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Erin (ems84) | 2659 comments The movie kind of had me when it first started and I went into it already knowing most of the reviews on it were bad but it seemed to follow the book well enough but by the 30 minute mark it just fell apart. I agree that it is hard to adapt King's work into a movie or TV show.

Ashley | 2 comments Just finished Cell, and I'm not sure what to think about it? It started off really strong, but the second half of the book got a bit slow and confusing, and that ending!

Potential Spoiler:

What frustrated me was what caused The Pulse was never explained, and neither was any of Jordan's theories being right or wrong.

message 178: by Marie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Marie | 9 comments I thought the book was pretty good though I wasn't expecting it to be about cell phone raving zombies, but I was able to get through the book pretty fast. One thing it did do was kept my attention to see what would happen next.
