his pelt is blacker than day and lighter than night. only the better to slip into the shadows and be unseen.

ii. if colors could describe people, then black would be avery. but not just any black. the kind of black that settled in the city when the lights were low, and the people were high. the kind of black that heightened your senses, made you aware of everything and nothing all at the same time. the kind of black that was so beautiful, because of the possibility of the unknown. the kind of black that you would go into, but never return.

when you see avery, your vision turns a hazy red, a feeling of lust and need is bound to go through your body. he exudes confidence, he knows what he's worth, he knows what he can do and for a man who leads a group of uncontrollable beasts, those are the stellar desired traits. when you hear him, your vision tinges with black, a feeling of confusion spreading at the harshness and insensitivity of his words. he may look like an elixir to your sorry life, but his words are that of poison, each meant to hurt where you didn't think you could be hurt at such a level. when you feel him, your vision turns black, because he wouldn't be touching you unless you were worth his name coming from your pleading, screaming mouth. he wouldn't be touching you unless he wanted to watch you cower in fear at his magnificent bravado, watch you struggle as if you had a chance to save your life.

there is a side to avery, one that brings forth breathtaking shades of blue and purple, a bit of white. his passions lie in astronomy and baseball, both of which he is the given king of. if there's a humane side to him, it lies in this, but it isn't anything that can be used against him. keep in my mind, that not even his parents were spared. avery doesnt have a weakness, his pack is his strength, and anyone who thinks otherwise is probably six feet under. his rules, his game, and if you break them, its your death warrant.

iii. time goes back to the day after avery turned 13. he would remember it like yesterday. riding his brand-new red bicycle down a bumpy trail in the middle of the woods, he hummed the tune of his favorite song with a smirk on his face. he was headed west toward his best friend's blue house to tell him about his first kiss with haley last night. a rustle in the woods and a flash of brown all turned into the haze of a memory. avery's bike crashed hard against a tree. pinned by a strong bear on the ground, a searing pain shot through his chest as he let out a restrained scream. kicking, screaming, scratching, avery pushed the animal as hard as he could to save his flesh that the beast had been biting. looking down his body, he made eye contact with what he had thought was a bear. instead he noticed the bearing fangs of a dogs head. for a second more, their eyes locked. avery had thought he saw a trace of pity. but it was only a glimpse of imagination. the wolf lifted his giant paw to club the side of the boy's head in result of a black out.

avery woke in his bed. his sheets drawn up to his chin and the room filled with blazing hot air. he made to sit up but his head said differently. the mutter of a soft word sent his mother through his bedroom door. "oh, sweetheart. i'm glad you're awake. are you okay?" she sat on the edge of avery's bed and brushed his dark hair out of his face. "what happened?" avery asked, taking a moment to regain his memories. "you crashed into a tree and flipped over your bike, ave. you bled a lot, but we didn't have the car to drive into town for the hospital. so i let you rest, and your wounds are healing rather quickly. i don't want you out on that trail again, you hear—" his mother explained, trailing away. avery was staring out the window, his files making their way back to the cabinet. he turned his head to his mom, his face practically green, and uttered a few words. "um. is it hot in here?" she felt his head and made a face, "honey, you're burning up!"

the transition wasn't so hard. every craving he had, he fed. human or animal. resisting hadn't even been a problem for him. viewing over his high school years, avery got into some pretty rough fights. avery seemed to win, no matter how big the kid had been. he had a killer arm for baseball and fast reflexes for wrestling. baseball landed him a scholarship and people he learned to love. he joined a pack he quickly gained respect for. and not much longer he became the alpha male. it wasn't hard to respect and understand avery's rules:

(1) stay loyal to this pack only.
(2) prey is killed only to be eaten
(3) no neglecting the innocent
(4) word of the alpha is law

even the simplest of rules are subject to be broken.
