Basically guy pretends to like girl so he can close to her father and their good name as they have had a great number of people in their family who've done the Gauntlet and even a few Guardians. So basically he wanted a good word and recommendation since he was dirt poor and figured there was no other way. When he saw the younger daughter had some sort of interest in him he used that to his advantage. Through that he subtly talked of the academy with the man and eventually they became closer until he finally applied for the gauntlet. Of course he developed some feelings for his daughter as well, but he broke up with her only days after being accepted to the gauntlet- which is a real shame considering she was also accepted
