I had the same feeling. I think that first section is terrible.

Phrynne I'm glad you shared that. When I start to read it I know now to keep going even if the beginning is bad :)

It definitely gets better after the preface ends. Enjoy! :)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) I read it in January and rated it 4****

excerpt from my review:
What was most notable for me in the novel was the way Towles described the landscape and people of New York City. Some examples:
So all of us were drunk to some degree. We launched ourselves into the evening like satellites and orbited the city two miles above the earth, powered by failing foreign currencies and finely filtered spirits.

She had changed into high heels and a tangerine-colored blouse that clashed with all her good intentions.

Phrynne I am about half way now and really enjoying it! As Book Concierge says the writing is beautiful.

Phrynne Finished and I liked it. I am going to rate it 4 stars. I became quite attached to the characters and enjoyed the story. Thanks to the person who recommended it. I would not have read it otherwise.

Glad you liked it Phrynne! It's great when a group pick you wouldn't have read on your own turns out to be really enjoyable.

One of the best reasons to be on Goodreads - as well as all the nice people you meet:)

Leanne (bookgirl91) I am just starting this now, only a month late (sorry) so far love the way it is written and really enjoying it

Rebecca (rebeccasg) I had such mixed feelings about this book. There we're scenes I really liked and I found the premise very interesting. However, I didn't really like any of the characters which prevented some of my enjoyment.
