Darktown - Big spoiler question (don't read until done)

I'm interested to know other peoples input on this. But towards the end, when Dunlow has Rake in the shed, points the gun, and the chapter ends 'bang'. I thought he killed him, I came to terms with that, and I actually understood it, and felt like it fit the story so much better. So when Rake was alive later and they said Dunlow just said 'bang'. I felt like it was almost a let down, if it can be a let down to not kill off a main character. I just felt the book might have been even more powerful if that happened for real.

Hi Shane. I just finished to book today, and I realize this is an old post, but...
I had a similar reaction, but I think I understand why Rake was left alive. Dunlow, as despicable as I found him to be, had his own really skewed code of ethics. I believe he wanted to kill Rake in that moment, but could not do it because Rake was a White police officer, and his partner. Had Rake been a Black man, Dunlow would have found a way to justify it, but killing a White police officer is a line he would not cross. Also, Dunlow was a bully, and we know that bullies are pretty weak and fragile creatures, emotionally. Rake was not so intimidated by Dunlow, which made Dunlow weaker in Rake's presence. At least, that's how I see it. I haven't given the book time to really sink in yet, having just finished it today.
