Michael Turashoff (superdaddy) | 56 comments Howdy all, I hope everyone is well. I just had to write everyone about my latest adventure. You see, my local library doesn't have a real good selection of ebooks and I wanted to read "The Burning Room" by Michael Connelly, featuring my favorite detective, Harry (Hieronymus) Bosch and they didn't have it in ebook format.

So, I had to go "Old School" and get the Hardcover (with real pages and everything) and it's like seeing an old friend after being apart for years.

I am really that please with reading a physical book that I had to share my experience with my friends. Am I pathetic or what?!?

So I would like to know, what format do you prefer, which do you use regularly and which is the best for you?

Bethany Miller | 3 comments No not at all. Sometimes it's nice to go back to a book with real pages. I do miss the smell of books... LOL Am I weird?

Zoe Radley | 558 comments hiya that's great ( well its great you got back into reading books) not so great in the fact that a library with an ebook collection wont have it, though its the first I have heared of. I prefer both mediums books and my Kindle device, basically I love my kindle for getting me books that I otherwise wouldn't find in England and it also helps keep my shelves breathable also I can take it with me wherever I go say commuting or even on holiday, but at the same time I will still read books so tbh having a kindle doesn't stop me reading books it just helps me focus a bit more

Bethany Miller | 3 comments Me too. I love e-books but a bookshelf full of different genres and colours really brighten up a room. I even imagine one day that the smell of book might even somehow get into e-books?! A girl can dream.. lol!

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments My favourite reading tech is definitely that solid, papery block. I have a Nook (and, of course, a phone) and they're great additions - for travelling, especially - but I think the book will be with us as long as we have physical bodies.

David Freas (quillracer) | 2955 comments I'd say my reading is split about 50 - 50 between books and my Kindle.

Some I get in book form as presents for my birthday or Christmas.

Some I pick up in book form because I want to keep them for some reason - have all the earlier books in the series, etc.

Some I get in book form because I happen to spot an entry on my 'To Read' list on the shelf in the grocery store or Wal-Mart or the like.

I use my Kindle for books not available in physical form, new authors I'm 'test reading,' or books I want to read but don't want to keep.

Thomas (tom471) | 2003 comments My wife and I both have kindles, which are great when traveling. We also read print books.

Skye | 2105 comments I only read print copies: paperback or hardback.

Pauline (pvn73) | 5 comments I pretty much only use my kindle and I love it!! In California, you can join any library in the State as long as you are a resident, so I have joined both the SF and LA libraries which have massive e-book collections, so I am very lucky!

damn you lol us in Britain are still living in the prehistoric times.... wish we had in all of our libraries (very few now might I add because of stupid councils and government cuts) unless I am mistaken and there are libraries with e-book collections *looking at my fellow englishers* lol

The libraries here use the Overdrive as their source of e-books, they have libraries in other countries so you can see if a library near you is listed!

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments I use OverDrive a lot for audio books. Use Kindle a lot on 3 different devices. Also like hardcover and paperback. I prefer mysteries in the paperback edition, although I am perfectly happy to go with Kindle on that.

History I tend to like in hardcover.

message 15: by Mark (new)

Mark | 3 comments i use paperback and hard back as the prices for real books are sometimes cheaper than e books some times all ive paid is the postage and other a a pound or so from kindle. I guess my prefferences are varied

Buying treal books keeps small book shops like write blend in bussiness and helps authors as well

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 440 comments I read both - some I prefer as Kindle as I like thick books. Travelling is definitely kindle, don't have to guess how many books I might get through, or desperately trying to finish a book so I don't have to take one with 50 or less pages.

message 17: by Anne (new)

Anne Penketh | 6 comments for me it depends on the type of book. If it's a page-turner then Kindle but as soon as you have to keep turning back to check names or plot details it's easier to do that with a paperback

message 18: by Gisela (new)

Gisela Hafezparast | 368 comments Day to day books, especially from the Library. I prefer paperback to hardback. I prefer the feel of them.

Traveling - Because of the space and weight restrictions either kindle or kindle ab or library e-books on i-phone. Just saves space, although I need to always check a trillion times to makes sure I have all charging cables and power bank! If those could be eliminate then it would be perfect. Hate especially all the cables.

message 19: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) Different formats for different purposes for me. I always have an ebook on my iPad to read while waiting at children's extramurals, meetings etc.

We listen to audio books on the way to school and I listen to another book while driving to work.

Paper books to read in bed before going to sleep.

Definitely ebooks for travel.

Brenda (genuinewordz) I read both ebooks and paper books.
- I have many paper books on my book shelves that I haven't read yet. I select one occasionally or if I win one from goodreads giveaways, I read that.
- I recently started to subscribe to Kindle Unlimited and read on my iPad.
- I also read ebooks from my local library on my iPad. The selection of books has increased significantly since they started this option quite a few years ago. I had tried this way long ago and hadn't seen the point when I could get the paper copy more easily. I now rarely physically visit the library because I borrow the books as ebooks now.

message 21: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (linzee) I find reading on my kindle makes me read more. It fits in my purse better than a book and I have a light on my case too. I also get paranoid while reading in public with an old fashioned book because someone always asks me what I'm reading, and I'm private about what I read. They can't help but peak at the cover. I also hate when the covers of books get bent!

That being said, I like old fashioned books too because its easy to flip through them and find a quote or part you liked and reread it. Seeing how far you are in a book page-wise is satisfying as well...

message 22: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (officerripley) Actually not all of Calif. libraries use Overdrive for e-books. Our libr. here used to use Overdrive but switched to a less-expensive system which doesn't work nearly as well. But then I'm in a "prehistoric" part of Calif.; 1 of our county supervisors wants to close the library altogether: "Every hour that damn library is open means another drug dealer on the streets!" Worse than pre-historic actually...
