Everything, Everything
question
Why doesn't Maddy stand up to her mom?

I love this book. But I feel frustrated about how mature Olly is. How come he knows Mr Darcy? Why is he so sweet, when he comes from a violent home? An ultimately, why does Maddy not stand up to her mom?

I feel like Maddy just loves her mom a lot and doesn't want to hurt her
Well, from what I remember, he mentions Mr. Darcy when he says girls love him, his sister being one of them.
& maybe he's so sweet because he wants to be better than what he comes from.
I agree that Maddy should have stood up to her mom, but maybe she doesn't want to hurt her like Niti said.

Maddy knows what her mother would be if she stood up to her, which is to be broken hence how she is still broken with the news of her husband and brother being dead. Maddy knows standing up to her is going to push her apart although at the end when she leaves her at the end, that was because she took her whole life away for stupid reason in my opinion. Family sticks together, don't be making up a sick joke to keep your daughter to stay behind with you.
I think it's because she didn't grow up like a normal teen girl. She didn't go to school, socialize normally, or seem to watch much TV, so maybe she didn't know how to stand up to her mother. Nothing in her life prepared her for it.
