Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments You'll be fine. I'm still angry at the ridiculous decision I made back in 2004 when we moved in. Dad also had his roof done at the same time. Bigger roof. His was done in a week. Dad, his gardener and my husband had to shovel the remains of our old roof into the gardener's truck and Dad paid to dispose of it because our roofer didn't even hire a skip. Bad, bad choice of workman.

Alex, I hope that missing 5* comes back (if they can delete, they can darn well resurrect) and I think that Mr. Lofty 2*'s reviewing history will show him up to any discerning person. I feel your Arrrgh and hope it won't stick with you too long, you have so much awesome!

Amy & Carole, I hope the sick grue leaves your vicinities post-haste!

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Did you find your EPK CeDany?

I hope they turn up on time on Thursday Alex. That’ll be your quickest option rather than trying to find another company.

I’m a bit meh with Radish. Despite them insisting that covers need to be word free to appear on their front page they are still promoting different stories that have words on the covers on their front page. It’s like they have their favourite authors who get away with anything and I’m clearly not one of them. Also the categories I have submitted my stories to are not showing up on the front page either. I am beginning to question the point of it all. But I can’t withdraw yet because I’ve got paid promos coming up.

It can't hurt, and you never know- but you'll be able to take them off and do a book on Amazon pretty soon, anyway.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Aww yes I can understand how you feel.

Theodore Cohen (theodorejeromecohen) | 1449 comments Well, CreateSpace finally has resolved the problem related to the limited display of pages on the Look Inside feature for my three children's books. (Knock on wood!!!) I upped the percentage of pages I wanted to be made available to forth (40%), and now, the ship seems to have been righted. The fact that this is the third or forth time I've had to address the issue with them this year does NOT give me a lot of confidence, but for now, things appear to be functioning as expected.

This problem occurred for the paperback issues. If you have problems with the Look Inside feature on your Kindle editions, contact Author Central and asked to be switched to the KDP Help Desk.

Christine Hartweg | 12 comments Hi all! Has this ever happened to you? You get a 2 star rating as the first rating for your new book (that's bad luck, perhaps, but o.k. of course); but not just that, but you get two 2 star ratings from the same reader on the same day! The GR system obviously allows this, but I think it's unfair as browsers will think two people didn't like the book, intead of one, and it will also drag down the overall rating of course. (I've had very positive feedback from other readers who don't do goodreads). Here's the book: Amy Robsart: A Life and Its End

message 858: by Ben (new)

Ben Jackson | 320 comments You will get people that do drive-by reviews. The easiest thing to do is just move on and not to worry about it. Some reviews don't even make any sense, but that they still get to post them. It sucks. Keep writing and try to give the book away to some interested readers and hope they enjoy the book and leave a positive review.

message 859: by Christine (new)

Christine Hartweg | 12 comments It's not about the 2 star rating. That's o.k. It's that goodreads allows multiple ratings. One person reads the book and two bad ratings are the result.

message 860: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I see what you mean. No I don’t think one person should be allowed to rate a book twice on goodreads.

I would address that with the editors. Why not three ratings by the same person? Or four? What a joke!

Can't wait to read it. I am sure it was murder- but who, Christine. I sort of believe Cecil had his hand in it- Just bought the book and boosted your rating on that cover alone. That was gorgeous. Love a man in a red doublet.

Thanks for the link! I've quite often seen this, that people add or rate the same book several times over. I'm sure in most of the cases this happens accidentally -- definitely a weak point in the system.

Thank you so much, Carole! I agree the role of Cecil is very interesting! I have to say the more I wrote about her death, the less sure I became regarding the cause ...

That's always the case, Alex. It never is what it seems- once they open walls and look at stuff- they usually advise updating. Codes are being changed all the time. Just think how safe you are making the house.

We are in the middle of Harry Potter right now- Book 4- so I have at least three months to worry about it until we finish the series.

message 869: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments CeDany, I know, I know. Some US authors were shocked at my 99p for an 86k word book. (I've upped it now.) Their books were several dollars for 20k words and they expected to sell them at that price. In the UK, you're lucky if people pay for ebooks. Other people won't download for free because they then expect it to be rubbish. I have no answers. But I know what you mean.

Alex you left your glasses on your head. Or in the fridge. One of the two. Cosmic law number one. Oh and yep any job done on the house will always cost more than was originally "quoted". Our roof doubled in price. Cosmic law number two.

I would just like to moan that my daughter's orthotic insoles (we have dodgy skeletons-hereditary thing) do not fit inside any shoes suitable for school. I was hoping to replace the boots she was wearing because she's got a large blister on her instep after wearing the insoles for weeks. I couldn't figure out why. Nothing fitted. And the insoles take up virtually all of the height of the shoe leaving no room for her feet. I hate shopping.

message 870: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Alex wrote: "Unfortunately the glasses were in neither place, Amy. I'm hoping they'll turn up when I start putting stuff back after the electricians are gone"

Oh. Well that's not right. Glasses are always on your head when you're looking for them. They'll probably turn up when the electricians have finished. And cosmic rule number three is they will turn up in a place you KNOW you checked several times. Always. BTW how's your mum? If she's well enough get her to look for them. Nothing is lost until Mum can't find it. Rule 4.

message 871: by Erica (new)

Erica Graham (erica_graham) | 1496 comments Mod
Nothing worse than trying to find glasses if you are blind without them. Glad you at least have a backup.

Just do a little everyday, Alex. Don't let it get to you.

message 873: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Ugh, I hate house stuff. I have an added pile of paperwork from when Mum and Dad died. That doesn't sound like much, but that's on top of everything (not just papers) we've accumulated over twenty years. So much to do and so little energy. Just focus on what's necessary Alex.

message 874: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Alex wrote: "Carole wrote: "Just do a little everyday, Alex. Don't let it get to you."

I'm trying but some days it's tough, especially knowing that once all the stuff IN the house has been sorted, the house it..."

When we bought this house I was a bit shocked at how it seemed to have not been maintained over the years. Leaky pipe in the downstairs loo. Leaky roof. Shoddy kitchen cupboards need replacing. Two busted drawers. Shoddy bathroom. No loft ladder and no boarding in the loft. Then I realised that houses have many things that need doing and it's not humanly possible to do everything. Either there aren't enough hours or there's just not enough money. We had the roof fixed. We had a TV aerial put on. I painted the kitchen cupboards-they're still broken inside. The pipe still leaks. My husband fixed the drawers in the kitchen this week. I've recently had the kids' bedrooms decorated and ours was done. The bathroom is still falling apart. I suspect the way it goes is that we'll do what we can with the money we have available and then move and let the next people despair at how little they think has been done until they realise how much money it requires.

message 875: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Keep it liveable. You're living there. Do enough to maintain it's worth and make sure it's not unsafe or going to fall down. There's also a lot to be said for not doing up a house to the extent you end up spending more on it than you can get back if and when you sell it.

For us I've had to put all plans on hold to get a new bathroom, as I'm worried I'm out of pocket about £10k getting our daughter through uni. And that's with the loans she'll be taking out to cover tuition and the percentage of maintenance she's entitled to.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Hi & Hugs, All!!

Consoling hugs to you, Alex. Yup, Any repairs on a house or car are always more than expected. Glad you found some interesting family history!

Went to the doctor's last week for my annual exam and got the flu! Feeling weak and sick. Trying to keep my husband from getting it. I hope that's it for the season for me. Better to get it over with quick. Hugs

Thank you, Carole. Hope you all get better soon. Hugs

It started last week and I have ALL the symptoms! I guess I know the best place to get the worst germs. Ugh! I'm actually confused at times... more than usual... Hugs

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Today I would like to complain about my wifi. I was using that. At best, I'd call it intermittent. (Hits the post button before it all goes tits up again.)

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Thank you, Amy. Hope your wifi comes back. We lose ours when it's windy, so I understand your frustration. Hugs

Alex, Smacking my own head over asking where your car keys were yesterday. I had been reading the last several posts at once and had it in my head that your eye glasses were probably with your car keys, which they probably were really not. I apologize for looking like an inattentive dolt. Hope you find your glasses soon. I cannot drive without mine. Hugs

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Alex, what a relief. I hope the electricians finish quickly, as it's a disruption as well as an expense. Hugs

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Great, Alex! I still think the information you found in your family archives is awesome. Any book ideas from it? Hugs

message 885: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) Im grrring over my current overload of emails I need to go over from the last 6 month's. They're book marketing emails from 5 successful book marketers that I receive on gmail. Theres 87 new emails plus old ones from them so I have A LOT of reading and going over them to do. So why haven't I? Well I'm not making excuses but laziness and build up of accumulation has been big.

Also between being busy doing other things, getting started on my new book, surgery on my shoulder and just wanting to have fun during the summer going into fall I've neglected the emails.

It drives me nuts because I could be sitting on goldmine opportunities with some but haven't gotten to them. My plan it to read them soon at least before the holidays come.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Have you tried half a grapefruit and wholemeal toast for breakfast? I am absolutely joking! But that is what the NHS hands out on a diet sheet. As a kid I wondered how doing the same as I’d always done was going to give a different result. As an adult I discovered Cambridge Diet. Apart from the exasperated question from the GP of “have you heard of Cambridge Diet? Apparently it’s getting results,” when I was 19, I’ve never had useful help from the NHS for my weight and I’ve had a weight problem since I was 6 years old. I basically now inform them of my job helping others lose weight with those products and they leave me alone. They complain at us for being overweight but they have no solutions or advice other than grapefruit and wholemeal bread. Drives me mad.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Alex, very sorry for your plight. It's a valid concern. How can a hernia heal without surgery? I always thought surgery was immediately necessary. Consoling hugs and prayers for your healing.

message 888: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Cutting down on carbs is definitely the way to go. Mine is also a carb controlled diet, although no longer classed as definitely ketogenic or low carb, (it still gives 1st a month loss). I could give you chapter and verse (I won't).

Sugar is a carb, sugar is in fruit, fruit therefore does not aid weight loss. Yet, everyone needs those vitamins.

Say you ate a pound of jacket potato, the science is that your body has the ability to store up to 5lbs of fluid. So yes, unless you intend to climb mountains you may not need as many carbs as you consume.

I hope they don't just leave you with a hole in your abdomen though. I'd expect more than that.

message 889: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments All of that should help. I couldn't give up skimmed milk in coffee if you paid me, but I only use sweeteners because of the diabetes in my family. (I've avoided it so far.) If you wanted lunch you could have a smaller dinner and a smaller lunch, you've still got to hit all the nutrition and food groups. It's not easy to get it right, but I'm sure you'll find something that works.

I can't use the Wii fit any more. I actually damaged my shoulder playing Wii tennis. Exactly how is that possible? It's ridiculous.

message 890: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Every body is different and has different requirements. I tend to have breakfast nearer lunch time, it's just the way it works out. But I can't get in the car in the morning at the weekend without having a chocolate milkshake or I'll feel sick. Fluids are more important first thing than breakfast, I know loads of people will tell me I'm wrong. The body needs re-hydration after spending a night sleeping without drinking anything. Fruits smoothies were great for that until everyone realised the sheer scale of the calories they contained.

And a lot of hunger is dehydration rather than hunger. Sheesh I'm a diet bore! Occupational hazard.

But you are so right, Amy about dehydration.
We eat eggs for breakfast everyday- sounds odd- but I am nuts about checking our blood lipid panels and we are doing well.
Alex, I drink my coffee with heavy cream- it was one of the best benefits to the keto diet. We eat a dinner at 2 pm- and have a light snack at six. I will eat some carbs- I eat potatoes- but I gave up all pastas, and sugars. I eat a few grapes every evening- but that's about it. It seems to be working. I took off forty pounds- and my husband took off 100. The best news they were able to reduce both our meds.

But, I am religious about checking in with the doctor- Mostly it's about whole food- we try to eat things that are one or maybe two ingredients. Once you get used to it- you'll be surprised that you ever ate another way.
check out the various forums on Reddit- that's where my kids found most of the information.

What's Quorn? Gammon is ham steaks?
Yeah- most people here eat dinner at 6-7- My husband is European- so we always ate our bigger meal lunchtime. Now we eat at 2 PM and eat something light later.

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Quorn- I love telling people it’s fungus. It’s a veggie thing made from something similar to mushroom. Source of protein. Completely tasteless unless it’s the burgers etc or you season it.
