Mckinzie Myers “Concussion” is a nonfiction novel about Doctor Bennet Omalu who dives in deep to discover the real cause of why so many NFL players are walking away from football with traumatic dementia and erotic behavior. He focus’ in on former Steelers player, Mike Webster, and discovers a disease called CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in his brain that had been killing him for years. Omalu has to fight against the NFL to get his point out to the public to try to save lives. This is a great novel for people considering to play sports, in specific football, because it goes it depth about how players use their head for aggression and the damages that these hits have on the brain. It gives a lot of facts on how powerful and damaging these hits can be on the brain. I enjoyed the fact that this novel specifies the life of Doctor Omalu and his background rather than it being straight facts about concussion, because it provides a lot of context into who he is. Although this is nice context to have, it began to become very repetitive and spent a great portion of the book on his background and life growing up in Nigeria. “Concussion” is very intriguing as it tells the story of Omalu fighting for what he knows is right and really draws the reader in.
