ABANDONED. Story of a girl who sees a devilish creature that 'eats' souls of the dead

So this had a girl who I think sees a devilish creature at a traffic signal.. I remember it being described as having a long body and she could see the souls it had devoured inside it. The creature looks right at her and smiles... It ended when she's at her home, under the sheets trying to save herself..and with her is her cat who's pregnant..she gives birth to kittens and the creature tries to 'eat' their souls..but since they were new Life, nor Death, that devil thing dies or something..

I read this about a decade ago.
And the setting was the US, I'm pretty sure.
more of a YA feel
