Amy | 12953 comments 5 stars for me! Nathan Hill certainly knows how to craft a well written and engaging story. I simply loved it! Definitely in my top ten for the year.

Not quite a spoiler, but I find myself having some leftover thoughts about how it all turned out - so this next section may be more useful for those who have read the book. A group of my friends are discussing this in two days, so perhaps I will have more to add or say after the discussion. But I wanted to say something about the twist/revelation near the tail end of the book. I think it just wasn't necessary to the story. The story was well crafted, beautifully written, and engaging without that element. Not that it ruined it, but I just felt it wasn't needed. And the element of deliberate duplicity caused me some pause on behalf of a specific central character. On the other hand, I can totally see how that character emerged towards change and transformation as a result of the experience borne, and I felt that ending was apt. Extremely well done!

There is definitely a lot of politics/protest in the book but if you're not heavily political, you may not make all the connections I was making because my mind is on politics a lot! And the first 30-50% is on Samuel's childhood which is crazy good and not at all about politics.

You're trying to be vague on purpose but I'm not sure which part you're talking about [do NOT read this if you want to read the book!!!] (view spoiler)

Karin | 9250 comments Two stellar ratings so close together on pbt! I was a kid during that 1968 stuff. I'm not really into political stuff, but add it to my tbr. The problem is, it's politics and if it is too much into a party's platform (I dislike all parties and can never find one that fits my personal platform which combines things from a number of parties plus) then it ruins a book for me, or at least pulls it down.

Amy | 12953 comments Guys, this is more like a novel where politics or the dynamics of politics plays a minor role. It's one of many themes in the background. I wouldn't make a distaste it's politics a reason not to read it. It's mother-son, son coming of age later in life.

Thanks--good to know.

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments I agree with Amy. Political things happen but it doesn't take a stance.

annapi | 5505 comments Good to know.... but I just checked, and it's 642 pages... I will have to read this as part of a game some time.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I've been back on forth whether I think I would like this or not. I'm not sure if I wanted to read something with a ton of politics in it (which Amy has since said it doesn't have have a major role) given the current political climate. Also I'm super uneducated on the 1968 protests. However with your and Jennifer P's review, I feel I might actually like this alot.

Put a hold for the audio at the library. I'm currently #28 on 3 copies.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I looked up the audio, it is "only" 21 hours and 50 minutes.

After I did The Goldfinch and it's 32.5 hour audio everything seems short in comparison!

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments Haha! Yes not even 22 hours! It took me a full month but only in my car and I have a short commute. Don't listen with kids in the car!

Anita Pomerantz | 9301 comments I am 60% done, and this book is stellar. So far, I totally would not characterize it as political, but I guess that could change. Joi, I think you will love it. I am pretty sure this will be 5 stars for me too.

The politics kick in when they are in Chicago for the anti-war protests.
