What a horror for a child to discover. There is simply no way a child could have processed what he discovered. That he hid is understandable. Not telling his mom, I just don't know.
I can understand his guilt, since he could not separate what the little boy inside him did and thought from the adult whose conscience was more fully developed. This resonates for me, since I think it is often the case with sentient beings!
