Can this book be read as a stand alone book, and not have to read the rest of the book in the series?

Dee yes, this book ends with a plausible ending and you can just leave it at that

Nikki Zimmermann Yes, but you'll want to read on!

Melissa Yes, you can. I read the second one because I enjoyed the first one so much.

Natalia No, you can`t, because in the end, there more questions without answers, you have to read the other books. I read the seven books and I'm waitting the next book.

Christina Teilmann Yes, definitely, I only read the first one so far. The most important story threads are nicely tied up and it doesn't end in a cliffhanger or anything like that.

Chris Yes, you can. In the same way that it is possible (or so I'm told) to eat a single potato chip or cookie.

Shaye Yes, there are no loose ends at the end of Outlander. It could be read as a stand alone. However, it is just the beginning of their wonderful journey.

M. If you can eat just one Pringle, you might be able to stop with just reading Outlander, but both outcomes are highly unlikely.

I'm agree with you, at the end of Outlander is just the beginning of their wonderful journey. But I think, can't read just the first book, because, what happen with Frank in twenty century. Is not fair for him, don't you think?

Annalie If you don't feel like reading the sequels, you can always read the reviews of those people who summarise books when they review them. That's what I did and it was quite interesting to see how the story continues. (I liked the book, but not enough to keep on reading the sequels).

No. The story is still complete without knowing Frank's perspective. I wasn't a Frank fan. I admit I felt Clair's betrayal at first was horrible but like her, my love for Jaime eclipsed all thoughts of Frank.

Why all condemn Claire, for her marriage with Jamie? I'm the only one who understands and supports me perhaps?
But like it or not, all the characters are important, even the secondary.

Mrsbooks The first book can be read as a stand alone. It ties things up neatly. When I read the first book, sure I had questions but I had no reason to think that those would be answered in a future book. I'm glad they were. 2 big spoilers have already been mentioned in this thread. I would have been irritated about that if I were reading it for the first time.

Megan Outlander is my favorite series! I don't think I could stop if I wanted to!

Natalilia - would you mind hiding the spoiler in your post...

Maria Rose Chris wrote: "Yes, you can. In the same way that it is possible (or so I'm told) to eat a single potato chip or cookie."
so true!

Maria Rose It is also possible to read the first 3 books and end there. They are my favourites of the whole series and I've reread them several times. I have read the rest as well, but wouldn't consider re-reading them, except for the last one An Echo in the Bone which for me was really good again.

Robbie Sure, you CAN - but who wants to? Wants to miss out on all the REST of the adventure!!!

Kristy Johnson Trust me, you'll want to keep reading.

Eileen Iciek I thought I would just listen to the first half of the first book and then quit. I was sure it could not be any good - time travel mixed with historical fiction seemed too strange. I was so wrong. I not only listened to all of the book, then the rest of the series, then the Lord John books, but then had to listen to them all again. Mind you, I got these from the library. Then I had to go buy each of the books. Paper and on my kindle.

Might be a little obsessed.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the Lord John books too, but I really did.

I agree Frank was very important to the story but the book was complete without his perspective. That's IMO. I didn't condemn Claire, I just found her behavior inappropriate at first. So did she.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. All characters are important and I fully support Claire. Maybe I'm too liberal and so I see the facts more naturally. Also, always noticed that they both, Jamie and Claire, had chemistry, since they met in the woods.

Linda Yes, you can read the book without continuing the series, although if you have been caught up in the intrigue and romance - especially the story of Claire and Jamie, why would you want to stop at the first book?

Anita Anderson Stopping at Outlander is like being on the first date with the love of your life. It is wonderful, but you'd want a next date, and next... until death do you part.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ gertt wrote: "Of course Claire and Jamie have a special chemistry...the series is about them. But Frank was also important to Claire. And, Claire did love him..."

I'm hoping the second book addresses some of Claire's feelings for Frank. Don't read this spoiler unless you've finished the first book, but I'm curious how (view spoiler)

I tried to stop at Outlander, but I'm just not capable. I need more Jamie!

Candy Yes. So far as I have read this was the best one.

Jeanine Celentano The second book is driving me crazy

Kim Bussey Yes, you can read the first as a stand alone. I would compare it to the Harry Potter novels in that way. All the plot lines created in the first book are tied up at the end, even though you know Harry will have to face Voldemort eventually.

Kathy yes.

Most certainly yes.

Pap Andreea Hello. Can I start with the 7th book? An echo in the bone? Cause in Romania was translated only the 7th book in 2010 and the 1st one in 2015. so we have the 1st and the 7th book from this series.
Pleeeease answer!!!!!

I completely agree. I read Outlander because of all the crazy hype. It was good, but not something that made me want continue on with the rest of the series.

That would be a very bad idea. Definitely start with book one. There is about a 25-30 year span between book one and book 7 so you would miss a lot if you skip anything.

message 36: by Pap (new)

Pap Andreea Ok. But I don't understand why they translated only the 7th book back in 2010 and translated the 1st one in 2015. Thank you. I will start with the first one.

Mrsbooks Pap wrote: "Ok. But I don't understand why they translated only the 7th book back in 2010 and translated the 1st one in 2015. Thank you. I will start with the first one."

That is really weird. At least book one can be read as a standalone. No crazy cliffhanger or anything like that.

message 38: by Pap (new)

Pap Andreea 2 different publishers translated the 1st and the 7th. Thats why i was thinking that maybe 7th it's a stand alone. I have now the both of them :) and I hope that when I finish the 1st book the 2nd will come out, :)

Let us know how it goes. People usually have a love/hate relationship with this series.
