I'm on page 100 and loving this book! It reminds me of so many things from childhood and has me googling the memories like crazy!

I think I won't be reading this one. :-(But one good thing here is to read the discussion even if you're not reading the book! :-)
The librarian who works at my school said she went to a conference and one of the presenters told the audience that this is a great book to read if you don't understand millennials.
Probably not going to get to this for another week or two, but totally looking forward to it!
I have read the book recently, but won't post spoilers. It DID NOT think I would like it, but a friend insisted I give it a try. It was wonderfully nostalgic and I could not put it down.
That's how I feel, Kelly! And to my great disappointment, I just realized I left my book at work!
I recently finished this book, after my husband asked me to read it SEVERAL times. A fun read for those with nostalgia for 80's/90's geek and gaming culture.
I've had this one on my TBR pile for awhile and even attempted to start it once. I think I will have to give it another try this month and see how I like it.
Went to buy this today and both branches had sold out- standard :/ I hate being bookless- I'll have to start something fast!

Just shy of halfway now and I'm really enjoying it.I understand enough of the references to not get frustrated, but don't know them all. But it doesn't feel like I'm missing anything vital but not understanding every reference. I feel like that's the sign of a good book.
It might be a blessing not to get all of the references. When you know them, the description gets a little tiring. The longer descriptions slowed the story for me at times. That said, I really enjoyed this story.

Going to look for this at my library after work tonight. OverDrive has me at #39 in line for 3 copies so that's probably not going to happen until the month is out. Don't really know a thing about this story. Looking forward to it.
I'm on a long library hold list for this as well so it looks like I won't be reading until next month.
I was never into gaming, and the 1980's and 90's are a blur to me (jobs, making babies, grad school, teaching, raising kids, new business, blah blah blah). I'm not sure I'm in the target market for this book, but I'll give it a try.
I grew up in the 80's and 90's but not much of a gamer. I've played some with my younger brother as kids and than a little in early adulthood but that's it. Was always impressed with how digital art has improved with the games I've witnessed others playing over the years and would have been maybe a little more interested in playing but it's a lot of time to devote to and I think I'd rather be outside, being artsy, watching films or....reading! ;)

Still, I could understand some references, so its not crazy hard to get. So no nostalgia factor for me, but I still enjoyed this book allot! The plot is intriguing and engaging, and honestly when your confused you just need to do a quick google search on your phone. Most of the stuff is explained well enough in the book, and really its incredibly action packed so it keeps you entertained.
I read this book a while ago and really enjoyed it. I was born in the late 60's, so in high school and college in the 80s. I loved all the pop culture references.There seem to be so few books written for/by anyone from Gen X.

The 80's references are all explained, though the nostalgia probably does add to the tale. But you probably won't like the story, if the idea of a future society that is 80% virtual reality does not appeal to you.
I really enjoyed this book! It was outside of my typical genre, but I found it intriguing although I did get a little lost and bored towards the end. I’ll definitely be seeing the movie to see how it compares.
I actually was planning on reading this anyway for my PopSugar challenge (#A2: A cyberpunk book), so I'm super excited it's also this month's catch-up book.
I have this one on hold from the library and I am so thankful for my multiple systems!! Through the large county system, there are over 40 holds on each copy of the book, and over 100 holds on each audio version. Yikes. Through my small library, I am number 2 or 3 in line. Phew. So we'll see when I am actually able to get this and join in!

I decided not to read this - then read the description, read the Kindle preview... & here I am!It’s not my usual type of book, & unlike those who have commented about growing up in the ‘80s, I was already working then. My first involvement with computers was as a student at the end of the ‘60s - punched cards, batch processing, etc. Working through all the massive changes in computing has been amazing- though I never got interested in computer games. Can’t wait to see how creative the author can be in this book.
The wait for this at my library is ridiculous. 318 is officially the highest number of holds I've ever seen.

The library's probably annoyed too. I bet their copies sat on the shelves for ages before the movie sparked interest again. Also, libraries are always pushing books that are tied to movies, so at least my library causes this issue with advertising. Oh well, good to see people still read.
It's going to be WAY worse next month. I've been in line for Little Fires Everywhere for ages, and I'm nowhere near close. I may have to buy that one once my book fund gets more pennies in it.

Are you a member of Audible.com? The first book is free, so this might be a great time to try it if you haven't already. Or maybe someone else in your family might want to try it for a month. You can also put your audio book on multiple devices, so you can share it with people close to you.
Little Fires everywhere still has a long wait list at my library too, though I'm #1 or #2 on a few other books I've been waiting for a long time. I might use my next Audible credit for Little Fires Everywhere. (You get one per month with your membership, and if you don't like it, you can return it and get something else instead.)
I'm feeling a little guilty that I still have Ready Player One out from the library. I read the first few chapters and couldn't get into it. I might enjoy it someday, but not now. The wait list if very short now (and there are a lot of books), but I might return it early in case someone else is desperate for it.
Someone mentioned that the discussion threads stay open, and people will continue to make comments long after the month is over.
The film premiere was mentioned on tv (London regional news) last night, with interview & a short excerpt from the film. It looked amazing!
The threads do stay open. We were discussing last months (or some months) books long after the group officially finished. I think this is because often people do have trouble getting their hands on the books, and sometimes we go on a tangent.I actually worried about Little Fires when it was just a nomination for exactly this wait list reason, but at least for this book club, we know the books are fairly tried and true. Different sized libraries have different amounts of books.
A librarian just told me yesterday not to worry if I keep a book the whole time. She said, "it's not up to you to worry about every hold list." So no guilt for keeping a book. If you don't read it this time, then the treads do stay open.
I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing the Ready Steady movie now, where I wasn't at all before I read the book. I wasn't that interested in the book either -- shows what I know. I, unexpectedly, enjoyed it.
I am #305 on Ready Player One, #287 on Little Fires Everywhere, #414 on A Wrinkle in Time.I had no idea any of these were getting movie tie ins until last night. It all makes sense now. I'm not too upset by the wait though. I currently have 25 books on hold, most with very short waits. And 15 books currently checked out that I'm trying to binge read. I'm hoping once I run out of books the wait will be much shorter for the group reads.
I'm currently #83 of 445 holds for this for the ebook but fortunately there are over 100 copies so I should finally be getting access within 2 weeks. I'm hoping the conversation continues into next month!Fortunately, I had requested Little Fires Everywhere before it was chosen and am now #97 of 797 holds and should have that in the next 2 weeks as well so I can participate on time. I had no idea it was being adapted but just saw that it will be a Hulu show with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington.
Starting this one a bit late as of today, but already 13% complete because it's just so good. Loving it so far. Usually I don't want to see the movie after I've read the book, but I can't wait to see the big screen version of this. The combined aesthetics of the 1980's, mid-apocalyptic Oklahoma, and the sparkling clean Oasis is just so cool.

I'm on Level 3 now with this, I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy it but I really have, so far ☺ I feel like I can guess how it ends but can't wait to see how we get there!
I started this late (last week) and I have to admit, I'm having a hard time staying engaged. I'm only on page 84, but I hope it gets more exciting soon. There are a lot of fun references, but the actin is kind of dull. I want more than references. Please get better!
I have read this a few years ago and I decided to re-read before going to the movie...probably won't get it done but will still read again. I loved the 80's vibe even though a lot of the gaming stuff went over my head..it was very funny. Also loved that one of my favorite groups, Rush gets to be a part of it.
One other funny thing, the author took his first royalty check from the book and bought a DeLorean...that's so nerdy LOL

Where are you in the book Karen? I saw one mention of Rush ( I am also a huge fan) somewhere but not since. I think I'm at page 168 or so. Wanted to finish by end of the month but don't think it's going to happen. I am enjoying it. It reads very fluid (perhaps because it's a YA novel?) but he can be a little redundant sometimes. The action is building for sure.
I finally will get this book next week after a long wait. Looking forward to reading yet another book that I normally wouldn’t if it weren’t for this group!

I haven't actually started it again, plan on starting soon. If my memory is correct, the Rush references are more towards the end of the story (view spoiler) .
Getting a late start, but finally picked up the audio version at my local library. It doesn't sound like my kind of story, but I'm willing to give it a try.

I'm on page 100 and so far not loving it. The 80's thing seems unnecessarily over-saturated, and I don't care for the main character. He seems a little arrogant. And I'm finding the video game emphasis tedious. I do like the puzzle/mystery aspect, and also the idea of such an elaborate VR.
I always thought that VR high school could solve a lot of problems. Guns/drugs in school, teachers abusing students, bullying, etc.
