Idiot Brain: What Your Head Is Really Up To by Dean Burnett

Idiot Brain What Your Head Is Really Up To by Dean Burnett

It's happened to all of us at some point. You walk into the kitchen, or flip open your laptop, or stride confidently up to a lectern, filled with purpose—and suddenly haven't the foggiest idea what you’re doing. Welcome to your idiot brain.

Yes, it is an absolute marvel in some respects—the seat of our consciousness, the pinnacle (so far) of evolutionary progress, and the engine of all human experience—but your brain is also messy, fallible, and about 50,000 years out-of-date. We cling to superstitions, remember faces but not names, miss things sitting right in front of us, and lie awake at night while our brains replay our greatest fears on an endless loop.

Yet all of this, believe it or not, is the sign of a well-meaning brain doing its best to keep you alive and healthy. In Idiot Brain, neuroscientist Dean Burnett celebrates blind spots, blackouts, insomnia, and all the other downright laughable things our minds do to us, while also exposing the many mistakes we've made in our quest to understand how our brains actually work. Expertly researched and entertainingly written, this book is for everyone who has wondered why their brain appears to be sabotaging their life, and what on earth it is really up to.

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments I am planning on reading this one sometime this month.

Savanes | 2107 comments I'm looking forward to your opinion Holly! :)

Reija | 101 comments I have read about half of it. He writes fine but I'd hope he could go little bit deeper, for example he tells you about coctail effect (you pick your own name from other people's talk) and says about same than you have read everywhere else, if he is neuroscientist maybe he could tell something more. It feels too packed, like school book without teacher which could go beyond story.

Catherine | 8 comments This is on my TBR list, but I'm not going to get to it before the group read date is finished at the end of the month. I'm curious, for those reading it, is it worth it to bump it up to the top of my pile? :)

Thanks! - Catherine

p.s. I've been a member of this group for a few years, and love the GR Choice Awards, and challenge. I just struggle with finding enough time to read, post, comment, etc. And now life has thrown me for another loop, and I'll have even less time. But I STILL love this group and the books! So thanks!

Holly Weiss (hollyweiss) | 11 comments I am learning from the book. Many interesting tidbits about our brains, but I agree with Reija that he could explore more in depth.

I won't have time to read it this month either, Catherine. We all just read what we can and there is no pressure to read everything. Glad to see that you love the group and challenge. I hope the new loop thrown at you isn't anything bad, just time consuming.

Thanks, Kristie. I'm not feeling pressure to read, just wistful, always wanting more time to read. I'm trying to focus on the positive, to see how I can fit in more reading. So far, having an audiobook going in the car is working out well.

The "new loop" is horrible, but I will eventually land on my feet. Thanks for the well wishes.

Laura | 1 comments I really liked this book, but I am interested in Neuro science and peoples behaviour anyway.
While I can understand other peoples opinion on the lack of depth, it was just right for me. I was listening to the audiobook and all the terminology already used made me struggle a bit, s any more and I would have been lost.
For me he also used the humour in just the right amount. Often these kind of books are either so try it just puts you to sleep, or the author tries too hard to be funny.

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments I finally started this one and am liking it.
It is very informative and written in a light interesting way.
Glad I finally started it. I almost said forget about it!

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments Well, it is like almost 2 months later and I am still not done with this. Some of it is interesting, but most of it is dry. He has this style about him, where is tries to be funny, but he isn't really. He also tells a lot of stories about himself that are not that interesting either. I think I am around 35% so there isn't an end in sight. I do want to finish it so it will count for my challenge though. I hope to be done by December with it. LOL
Would not really recommend it to anyone.

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments I finished...
Somehow...
Worst book I read all year.
I can't even think of one interesting tidbit I learned.
The writing style was annoying to me.
