SOLVED. Sci Fi/Fantasy Romance series from decades ago [s]

This series was published in the 70s or 80s, I believe.

The premise here is that there's some disease/mutation that turns some people into vampire-ish things. Note: they aren't really vampires. They do more of a soul-sucky thing through hands that turn into tentacles. But they have to do it, and it kills the person they soul-suck.

There is sex in these books.

The first book is about some lovers who figure out that (view spoiler)[ if the soul-sucky not-vampire is careful, and the victim is totes willing to sacrifice themselves, then the process Doesn't have to be deadly. (hide spoiler)]

One of the books centered around finding a cure made from the flower of a mahogany-ish tree.

I think this may be one of the Sime Gen books by Jean Lorrah and Jacqueline Lichtenberg if I remember correctly.
