SOLVED. Adult Romance/Fantasy. Wizards, two of whom are exes in their 30s, compete in a series of trials for some sort of status or position. [s]

I think the position was on some sort of counsel of wizards. After much tension, the two exes eventually get back together, but I am pretty sure the female acted like she hated the male first. The male in this relationship is the protagonist. Other than the two exes, there is only one other competitor, who is male, and I think the female may have been involved with him as well. The setting is contemporary and I THINK in New York, or another major US city. I read this novel in 2010/2011, but it may have come out earlier. I am pretty sure that it had a sinister plot twist with betrayal and such, but I really cannot remember the details.

Can you describe the position they're competing for (e.g., very senior, ambassador to certain species)? What do the trials involve?

They are ex-lovers, who dated as teens or in high school. I cannot recall the exact position they competed for, but I believe it had a lot to do with status as a wizard, maybe on a council. I do not recall other species being in the series, but I could be wrong. The trials tested their magic, but they were dangerous, as well. I am pretty sure they could've died in them. In one of the trials, I think they were trapped somewhere...I apologize for the vagueness. I can't remember most of the specifics, which is part of the reason I really want to find and reread this book, because it is driving me insane.

That's not it, but it was the correct author. "Edge of Darkness" by Cherry Adair. This has been an on-and-off obsession that has been driving me crazy. Thank you so much!
