My dad introduced me to Flashman when I was 15 years old, and I still think it was the best bit of parenting he ever did. This was the first book that made me feel cleverer than I am, and made me realise that history is written by the winners. Why is it a classic for you?

I might have to re-read these. A great series of books. The genius was to make Flashman a coward and a cad. Very much the anti-hero but you can't help but root for him.
