This seemed like a logical turn of events to me. Probably because I work in a foot and ankle center and I've seen this twice in the past month.
I thought it made the story more authentic and was pleased to see she handled this realistically. I'm even more convinced with your experience and input, Laura!
It was a true outcome to the situation. When faced with losing a limb or your life, losing the limb is the only choice.
I liked that it was included in the story. Not everything turns out perfect for the hero or heroine, but they will overcome the problems.
The story was more authentic this way, as you all have shown. Gabe's self-image of courage and selflessness will now be challenged by reality.
It made it more plausible. I've seen people lose a leg from cellulitis, and Gabe's infection was far worse, if aggressive treatment didn't work, and somehow his leg miraculously heal, then it would've been too far fetch for me to believe so I agreed with Gerard's direction to him losing that leg.
