Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I am interested! I haven’t read MacInnes in donkey’s ages. Will have to descend to the basement to see if I kept my complete set of her novels during the Great Cull of 2011, but even if it’s gone I’ll pick up a Kindle version. Date is fine by me.

Peggy (dandelion_cottage) | 304 comments I love Dragonwyck. I reread it a couple of years ago and then watched the movie--Vincent Price was so creepy. It was hard for me to imagine that Gregory Peck was originally supposed to play that role; he seems too "nice." :)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments I've started a thread for the Above Suspicion read in the Buddy Reads folder. We'll plan on the start of September unless someone objects. Looking forward to it! This will be my first Helen MacInnes book.

September 1 sounds great for Above Suspicion. I hope you'll all enjoy this one.

I'd like to try reading this one in October. I just have too many books on the go right now. Thank you.

message 106: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Angela Thirkell seems to have dropped off our radar a bit. Is there anyone interested in reading one of hers before the end of the year?

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments Does anyone in the Above Suspicion buddy read mind if we move this to October for Elinor?

I don't mind as I still don't have a copy. :)

I'm thinking maybe a September read for I Capture the Castle. I'm happy (in fact keen to) lead if my fellow moderators don't own a copy. I will have to request a loan from another branch.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments Debbie has raised a request for a "spooky" October buddy read. Suggestions? I'm sure there are a lot of gothic books that would fit the bill.

My suggestions (both Tam Lin retellings with All Hallow's Eve tie-ins, but VERY different):
The Perilous Gard
Tam Lin

I've reviewed both on GR if you want to know more about these.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I’m okay with moving the buddy read of Above Suspicion.

I was recently given a copy of The Perilous Gard and would be up for reading it in October.

Sadly I don't own any of her books. & at the moment we are doing up the spare room, so everything is in my tiny office including books.:/ I have to get some stuff read & given away!

Anyone else wanting to join Abigail in a read. Doesn't have to be a moderator? :)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments I don't have a copy of I Capture the Castle, and I read it just a year or so ago (I checked it out from the library, but I no longer have a library card, because of $$ reasons*). So I won't join this read, but may drop by to comment in the threads.

*Stupid out-of-towner fee for an annual library card is $75. I have way too many books around the house and on my Kindle that I still need to read anyway.

Because this book is in my region I think it will only cost me $1-2 to interloan. Out of region, the charges can be so hefty that for big coffee table type books you might as well buy the book .

Shirley Jackson is one of my absolute favorite authors, and this is a great October read.

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Both of those look good, Tadiana. Thanks for posting. Fall is my best reading time of year and I love October for spookies. I don't have either one. Can investigate them. Love SJ too, tho I've read THoHH a few times. My favorite by her is We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Just count me in on ANY spooky October read. I do the All Hallows' Read challenge in another group and add as many as I can. My favorite genre. ;)

I have requested this from another library - I'm hoping it will be here next week. I'd rather set a time when the book is in my hot, little hands. :)

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments well, darn it!..my rather large library system does not seem to have it. :( Amazon is just too high. I looked on Thriftbooks and can get an "acceptable" paperback for $3.79. It looks like a book I will like, I think I will order it and choose something else so I can get the free shipping. So, count me in! I need time for it to arrive. The 5th would prolly work out fine for me. Thanks for leading Carol. :-)
I am looking forward to it.

oh that is wonderful! I will get from there, then. Thanks my friend!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments I got it! YAY! Count me in. I'll let you all know when it comes. Hopefully this week. :-)

Thanks, Tadiana. There was only 2 copies. I got one. If anyone else wants one, go grab it now. ;-)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments I thought there were a whole bunch of copies on AbeBooks? But perhaps only two in the "very good" category. Anyway, I love AbeBooks. I usually check two or three different online sources when I'm looking for a used book, and 9 times out of 10 they're the cheapest. And shipping is almost always "free" (i.e., built into the price, but their standard starting point is $3.48 rather than Amazon's $4, so why not support the smaller company?).

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ wrote: "I thought there were a whole bunch of copies on AbeBooks? But perhaps only two in the "very good" category. Anyway, I love AbeBooks. I usually check two or three different online sources when I'm l..."

agreed! I don't know why I didn't think to check it. I use Amazon the most bc I have Prime which includes free shipping. But, very often. older books are sold by a third party, so no free shipping. I forgot about AbeBooks. Thriftbooks crossed my mind bc I had seen someone mention ordering some books recently in another group. It's a good idea to check several sources online. The prices is very good and completely doable. Not sure about the copies. When I clicked on add it to my cart it showed only two copies available. It did say that there might be a tiny bit of wear and tear...like pencil marks in the book and some small damage to the spine. I expect that with used paperbacks tho. Not a problem.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments It might have meant two copies available from that particular seller. No big deal, though. :)

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ wrote: "It might have meant two copies available from that particular seller. No big deal, though. :)"

Oh! Probably! I am not all tho familiar with AbeBooks. I might be soon. Didn't know they had free shipping!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments Shipping on AbeBooks is free like 90+% of the time, but double-check the price info to make sure. :)

Ok the 5th it is. I'll pick my copy up tomorrow.

I have a really free September as far as group reads go.

I finally found a copy of The Winthrop Woman & I was wondering if there is any interest in a group read around the 15th of September?

I've read that one fairly recently. I'd be interested in Dragonwyck or Avalonby Seton, though.

I will be re-reading The Ivy Tree with the Mary Stewart group and I may try to read Brat Farrar by Josephine Tey along with it, since that book has been identified as one source of Stewart's inspiration for her novel, if anyone is interested in reading that over here with me. I'm planning to start Brat Farrar around the 10th of September, once I acquire a copy!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments I've been interested in reading Brat Ferrar ever since I found out the same a few years ago. Let me think about it. I'd have to order a copy. :/

It's a very good book. The rest of Tey's books would fall more under the Reading the Detectives group though.

@ Moonlight Reader. I don't have those two Seton titles. There isn't any reason why we can't have two Seton reads though if you are happy to lead.

Other than The Winthrop Woman I have The Hearth and Eagle (somewhere) Green Darkness & My Theodosia I have been told these are some of her weaker titles though.
