What would you like to read with some friends?
I won't be able to start for about a week because I have too many books going right now but I'd love to do a mini-group read of a buddy read of either:Amberwell by DE Stevenson
or
Death in Kashmir by MM Kaye
Anyone want to join me? Or suggest something else to read?

I don't have Amberwell, but I do have Death in Kashmir (at least I'm pretty sure I do - it'd be up at our cabin and I could grab it this weekend). Our library's down for repairs, but I'd like to read some more D.E. Stevenson, too, later!
Peggy wrote: "I'd be in for Amberwell, too. I got it when it was on sale for Kindle."I'll see when my library can get it in - what time frame are we looking at?
I just discovered D.E. last year, and so far there hasn't been a stinker among any of her books, although some are definitely stronger than others. I really love her!
I don't know how to do this officially so We will just make it up as we go. Voting for which book we will read will close at midnight on March 3. A majority will win it.Let's start it March 13. I think that's a Monday.
I think we're going to propose one of M.M. Kaye's "Death in" books (or possibly The Ordinary Princess) for the first official group read (the other moderators and I are working on figuring out how we want to proceed - hopefully we'll get a poll up soon). If that makes a difference to you, you might want to just pick Amberwell for your mini buddy read. It's totally up to you, though. :)
Thanks for the update. That does make it easier. Unless anyone has any strong objections let's read Amberwell starting on march 13.
My real-life book club is reading The Scarlet Pimpernel in March, so I need to start it in the next couple of weeks. I know it's a bit older than most of the books we're talking about (1905). On the bright side, that means it's a freebie on Gutenberg.org, and the Kindle version on Amazon is also free: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0082PEM6S/... Is anyone interested in doing a buddy read of this with me?
I like D.E. Stevenson very much, so I would be up for that. I've been reading her over the last 3 or so years as books have become available. I adored the Miss Buncle books.
Hi Tadiana I have been wanting to read this so I attempted to download the Amazon link one. It has a different title and different first chapter title - is it the same book? Below it , there are several with your title but with a download of .99.
Just want to make sure I read the right one. I'll fit it in after Mary Stewart, what a great month!

You know, I wondered about that. If you pull up the paperback on Amazon, it shows The Scarlet Pimpernel, but if you click over for the Kindle version, it shows as The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. I assumed it was just an alternate title, but I just Googled and it's the sequel. Something is fishy with this at Amazon.
Can you download the version at Gutenberg.org instead? Here's the link: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/60
I guess if we really like The Scarlet Pimpernel, we're all set for buddy reading the sequel, lol. When would you like to start? I'll squeeze it in whenever, I just need to be able to finish it by March 17, when my IRL book club meets.
Oh, I can even read Nine coaches after SP or pause NCW. I also have to be finished by 19th though because my best friend since preschool is flying in to visit me for a week. I downloaded it and it's ready to go- A few options are start now or we could wait until about a week before your meet, the 11th? For once, I'm very open...
Let's go ahead and start this Friday. I've got an 8 hour drive to a wedding, and my hubby will be doing most or all of the driving so I should be able to get some good reading time in this weekend. :)I've set up a discussion thread for this under Buddy Reads.
Ok , sounds great! I'm excited to read. People seem to like it. A lot of people read it in Classics Group.
Since I am enjoying my first D.E. Stevenson so much (Amberwell). I think I'd like to read Celia by her. Anyone else interested????
Oh good. Bc I was thinking I'd get the audiobook. Well. Kindle too. The audiobook is cheap if you get the kindle first.
I’ve downloaded a copy onto my Kindle (Celia’s House is not one I have in paperback) and will read along if time allows.
Decide when you'd like to start the Celia's House BR and we'll set up a discussion thread for it. :)

& I am doing a group read of My Cousin Rachel next month. I'd really like to set up a buddy read here as well. Is anyone interested? How does the 3rd of April sound? :)
I would join the "Celia's House" read and probably the "My Cousin" one. I also have a question; how do you guys do so many buddy reads, and participate in the board discussions as well? I am still catching up on discussions : )Another book recommendation (probably for summer time), would anyone be interested in Jane Aiken Hodge's "Greek Wedding"? I read it many years ago and would like to see if it has changed for me... I really liked it then.
I've added Jane Aiken Hodge to our list of authors without a group. I'm going to have to go through the threads & find all the suggestions I've missed.
In answer to your question... I'm retired & a reasonably quick reader. This is also the only social media site I'm really active on & I don't watch much TV. Saying that... I probably do need to curtail my GR time as my reading rate has slowed down quite a bit!

I would definitely join My Cousin Rachel! I finished The Scapegoat recently and enjoyed it. I read Watch the Wall My Darlin by Jane Aiken Hodge about two years ago and liked it quite a bit. I see from looking quickly that there are far more of her titles available on kindle now than there were previously.

Cool! I'll add it to our bookshelves & will give a starting date of the 3rd of April.
I'm leaving Celia until there is a starting date. (I have a couple of Stephenson titles, but not these ones unfortunately)

I'm going for the third of April. I have 3 books I want to tidy up before the end of the month. :)
Lovely book! About 25 years aog, I discovered Daphne du Maurier and read nearly all her novels. Hope you enjoy it :0)
Vero,"Rebecca" was assigned reading in high school (please don't ask when!) and I just loved it. I have reread it also. But I've wanted to try something else by DDuM.
Oh, I forgot! I read "Jamaica Inn" with another group since I've been on GR. The description of the Moors there in that book was outstanding.
I have Frenchman's Creek & Jamaica Inn & have never managed more than a couple of chapters of either of them. No rush, but I'm hoping a buddy read will get me through them!
You had Rebecca as assigned reading? You lucky thing! Some of the stuff we had turned my classmates off reading for life.

:0)I knew of Rebecca before but it was only when I arrived in the UK that I properly discovered her. I enjoyed Jamaica Inn too, and Frenchman's Creek although it was quite different. In fact, all her novels have different feels to them, and she catches you at the end every time. Apart from those, the ones that have stayed with me are The House on the Strand, and The General's Daughter. As for short stories, Don't Look Now, The Birds, and The Blue Lenses are arresting.
Carol,I didn't care for "Jamaica Inn." I saw glimmers of DDuMs greatness and there was a plot element that is a very strong "pet peeve" that I just couldn't overcome.
That was my deal with Frenchman's Creek. It butted right up against one of my major pet peeves. (view spoiler)
Yes, I can see that. Was it (view spoiler) in Jamaica Inn? I guess it is probably that. And I agree too about Frenchman's Creek.

So propose your mini buddy reads here, and if you get anyone else to join you, we'll create a separate thread for you to discuss that book. The timing of the buddy read is totally up to the participants in that read.
