Alex G,
I only listen to an audio book if I am driving on a long road trip, which I do often. Like print books, audio books on CD are borrowed from the local library. I only purchase one if I am certain to want to read or listen to it more than once.
My favorite audio book is Where the Red Fern Grows, the author of which is Wilson Rawls. It is narrated by the actor Richard Thomas, who does an excellent job. I believe the training and requirements associated with their profession make actors uniquely suited to narrate audio books.

was it bedtime listening? ^_-

I just recently listened to Carmilla as a Librevox recording (Librevox is free) narrated by Elizabeth Klett. I really liked it and think that listening to this kind of 19th century writing style is preferable to reading it.
What are you currently listening to? What are your favorites? Do you have your favorite narrators? I heard Meryl Streep (sp?) narrating a short story once and her ability to change her voice to match the different English accents was just amazing.
