Vampires, Vampires, Vampires --> reading backwards -> tiny bunnies ->ninja kittens
I'm with you in spirit KD, but I can't back a moratorium. There will always be a jewel hiding amidst all the crap & I will always be willing to dig a little for the good stuff.10 sparkle-free vampire novels:
Suckers by Anne Billson
The Vampire Tapestry by Suzy McKee Charnas
Midnight Blue: The Sonja Blue Collection by Nancy A. Collins
The Time of Feasting by Mick Farren (first of the Renquist Quartet)
Those Who Hunt the Night by Barbara Hambly
The Traveling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon
The Book of Common Dread by Brent Monahan
Anno Dracula by Kim Newman
The Golden by Lucius Shepard
Vampire$ by John Steakley
(I have a whole shelf full-- feel free to check it out)
Near Dark and Innocent Blood are two of my favorites for movies. I recently watched The Forsaken, which was full of pretty people who couldn't act their way out of a wet paper bag. At least the vampires still got all explody when exposed to sunlight.
Let me know if you have trouble finding it. I see used copies all the time, might even have a spare of my own I could send your way.Aeons ago, I went to Mr. Shepard's book signing & he claimed he planned to write a sequel. This would be swell.
The Bela Karloff Dracula is the movie that scared me so much as a child I never returned to the genre. And just the stills of Nosferatu makes my skin crawl with the creepies. So yeah, those 2 are phenomenal and hit me in a Jungian archetypal way. I may not seek out vampire books/movies but the images and discussions don't do a thing for me. Oh wait, Lestat is downright creepy - the book, haven't seen the movie. Call me old-fashioned, but I think vampires should be scary and not sparkly!

Why have I not read any of this man yet? What is that?

Just to (furtively) justify my stoopidity, both Bela and Boris begin with B, and appear in horror films, which I don't watch....
The Sookie Stackhouse novels are fun. I am on # 8,and will wait for 9 and 10 in paperback.not classic lit, but quite fun!also laurell k. hamilton's anita blake series is great fun,and she lives in missouri. i met her at a booksigning. there was so many people there they put her signing hand on ice while she talked to a 2nd group of fans, because there were too many to put in the room all at once! her vampire books are great, and of course, anne rice. i've also met her,and her son in signings.
first book in laurell's series is called GUILTY PLEASURES. the latest book is in hardback now,and there are over 10 books. let me count them.on my shelf now.16, 17 counting the newest in hardback.
let's see. amazon.com is happy to mail used copies. i don't loan books much, because to me they are an investment, and if i spend my money, well...... and there are libraries too.sorry.
it's called being subtle, sally. if i was "david" on here i would have cussed you out, called you an idiot, and shown quite a bit of apathy toward the situation.hope you are glad i don't act like david, and that you didn't think i was being snotty, cause i wasn't. ok???
be good,and enjoy the books!
I only buy Anne Rice in hard back. I am not sure why I am like that. I have met her, she asked me what my fav book was. A toss between Memnoch and Servant of the bones. Have you read any of her new stuff Gary?
Gary, whatever you think of David, he's not here, so do me a favor, don't cite him since he's not a part of the group. It's not going to do anyone any good...you got issues with David, and you want to talk about them, take them to David. You want to talk with me about this post, message me privately. Thanks. Nobody's here for a big net war, from what I can tell, anyway, and citing other people in posts like that just invites them to defend themselves.
Back to vampires...the first vampire movie I remember was "Love at First Bite" starring that...tan dude...George Hamilton?

Pictures Tad's acoustic version of "Somebody", first on Hamilton's sidewalk, then for all his new friends in the St. Louis lockup...
tadpole wrote: "I'll cop to being as subtle as a train wreck...sorry..."I'll politely thank you not to mention train wrecks.
*shudders*
Off topic of vamps on topic of stage performances. PBS did a piece on Lord of the Rings stage production last night. Not a huge fan of books or movies but this is going to be something to see. The sets, the music, the wardrobe,it was all so well crafted. Tours in 2010.
Oh no, I'm smirking. Whenever I think something is being done for pretty much commercial reasons, riding on the wagon of other hits, that line from one of the subsequent Jaws movies comes up. hee!

KD@68: When you drop in on Shepard, lean on him about that sequel will you? Better yet, let's carpool. I'll wear sunglasses & try to appear intimidating, and then we can go to Portland and make Amy buy us Voodoo Doughnuts (just a couple, not the whole business). Then you can drop me off at Powell's.Sally: I would also recommend Christopher Moore's first book, Practical Demonkeeping, and I thought Lamb: the Gospel According to Biff Christ's Childhood Pal was well-executed (sorry) despite the rather silly title.
BunWat wrote: "Shadow of the Vampire is a 2000 and something film based on Nosferatu, in which John Malkovich plays the vampire and the premise is that Murnau hired a real vampire to play Nosferatu and is basically making a snuff film. Also pretty damn creepy. "I thought Willem Dafoe was Max Schreck (the vampire), and Malkovich played the ambitious director.
Oh, they're both sufficiently creepy-looking in real life, esp. Dafoe - but Malkovich has those disturbing character roles down-pat which gives him a leg up on the villain legacy IMHO. Malkovich was villainous enough as the shameless director without having to be a monstrous bloodsucker in Shadow of the Vampire. Dafoe was the vampire.
Richard worked with both a long long time ago and says they are the nicest guys. Yet both get cast as the bad guy, especially Defoe.
Sure, with a face like Defoe's, all bones and hollows, that's what you're going to get.And Malkovich has that creepy voice going for him.
Hey, that bone and hollow stuff makes sense for Walken always getting the bad part too. And Malkovich isn't your typical good-looking guy, a bit weird in fact.Aside from which they are all terrific actors.
i happen to love the whole vampire myth, and most of the stories to do with them although dracula is one of the hardest books to read, i get so bored with the romantic period books but i've been pushing myself self to go forth with reading it.i'd have to say although i am a twilight fan and have read the series i am overly sick of everyone's obsession. i loved vampires before reading the books and not the type of vampires that are sparkly- those are fairies. hopefully after all the movies are made the twilight hype will die down, just like harry potter.
After Wizards etc, and then Vampires it will be interesting to see what the next phenomenon will be. My guess is elves.
My bad, welcome to TC Natasha.
is that a good or a bad thing?? lol the name is russian and i already know the whole backwards spelling thing and thank you for welcoming me.
Thanks for pointing out the backwards spelling thing.
That's what I thought to myself, too, Minds.
I wonder if it's some kind of sneeze/incantation?
Somewhat akin to: Ah-Bracadabra.

Unlike today's romantic broody handsome vampires which KD loathes.
