Betsy | 608 comments Have you read the Librarians Manual?

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments That's actually a difficult question to answer because it's (unintentionally) quite vague. How you should use the group depends on what you are trying to do...

As a Librarian there are general etiquette things, like, Post a quick reply to say you are working on something, and then a longer one (or edit your original) to say when you are done and what you did.
Also (and I'm sure you don't need me to say this) - be polite, even when the poster is quite obnoxious! If they're really bad, flag the post and let Staff deal with it. If someone is being rude/uncooperative, it is fine to bow out of a particular thread and cease responding.

Regarding folders:
General: Often announcements or things of general relevance to Being A Librarian
Adding New Books: What it says.
Book Cover help: For stuff about Book covers. Make sure all changes are within policy - list on the first post in the folder.
Page numbering requests: What it says. NB ebooks don't always get them because of ereader variations.
Policies is mostly for suggestions for additions to the official Manual and for discussions on interpretations.
Genres - fairly low turnover folder, but WYSIWIG
Book issues: Catch all folder for "Doesn't fit elsewhere"
Series: Stuff that needs fixing for series.
Looking for a Project?: This is where we post bigger tasks that either need many hands, or which we spot while working on something else. Some people prefer to work on a single large task, so this facilitates that.
Language and Translation issues: Translators, Edition language, Blurbs, also requests for librarians who can work in a language that you/I cannot.
Quotes: Fixing quotes.
Quizzes: Fixing quizzes
Trivia: Fixing trivia
Awards: A subset of Projects plus a place to discuss whether something is a valid award for Goodreads purposes.
Questions: Not entirely sure, but kinda general catch-all for non-book, series or awards issues.
Additions to Manual: (More) Formal proposals for manual additions, usually following discussion in Policies.

In all cases, if you're not confident, watch the topic and look at what happens.

"Please do not link to specific users' profiles, reviews, edit logs, etc. in this group. The only exception is when linking to an author's profile when requesting edits/merges." (Found under "Group Info" on the Librarians Group homepage.)

(Also, in reply to your comment #3: always check the Librarians Manual when doing edits, especially if you don't do edits often. There is a lot of information and do's and don'ts in there. I am always astounded by the ease with which some new librarians will f.e. replace covers against policy, as if they have never even looked at the manual.)

Marcos Kopschitz | 122 comments David, I am a recent librarian.

I read the full Manual beforehand as requested. Even then, it is too extensive and sometimes I just don't find what I need there. So, I ask fellow librarians in the appropriate thread. As obvious or elementary my questions may afterwards prove to be, there's always a librarian of good will to help me find the answers. :-) People have been very friendly and supportive.

On the other hand, I have learned that rereading the Manual frequently is necessary.

And reading a lot of posts in many threads according to my interests (ISBN or cover policies, ACEs, how to deal with different editions, how and where to best include specific information, etc.) has been one of the best ways to improve my work as a GR librarian!
