Fire in the Sky: The Walton Experience claims to be non-fiction and was turned into a movie about twenty years ago.

Strangers by Dean Koontz is fiction, and mentioning it in a thread that's looking for aliens is technically a spoiler. Oops. I can't remember if it has missing time exactly as you describe it, but several characters have similar problems - sleepwalking, fugue states, blackouts and the like. It's a good read, in any case.

Love your suggestions Peter. I didn't know Fire in the Sky was a book first. That was a great movie.
And Strangers was one of the reasons I kept reading Koontz back in the day.
