Hi! This is the thread for the buddy read of The Monk and (or) The Demon of Sicily: A Romance. We will BEGIN ON MARCH 6TH.

I'm going to read both, but I'm starting with The Monk because I already got that one from Amazon.

This book is insane. I don't even know if I really like it but it's so crazy I can't stop.

Pete Postlethwaite as the monk, hands down. He was in dragon heart and that 90's version of Romeo & Juliet. IMDb says inception too as Maurice Fischer.

Omg, I have no idea how this book survived. This book is all kinds of fucked up. I'm up to chapter 7. I wonder how many ladies read this when it was first published? I would think this would've been quiet a scandalous book. (view spoiler)[ am I mistaken or did they not say in the first chapter Antonia had a child and was married? I'm done! wow, this book was fantastic. I am so surprised its over 200 years old. some of the ending surprised me and some didn't. Oh no Scott. I hate to hear that. There's plenty more to read, though. I had to make myself stop reading books I wasn't getting into. So now I give them a few chapters and if I'm not feeling it, I move on.

I started The Monk this morning. I'm at chapter 2; I just read the part where (view spoiler)["Rosario" admits he's actually Matilda. I really didn't see that coming: I thought he was going to come out to Ambrosio and admit that he's gay. It was becoming obvious there was something slightly romantic between their relationship (hide spoiler)].

So far, I don't think the book is that scandalous...I'm guessing that happens in later chapters? I'm pretty sure that (view spoiler)[ Ambrosio is actually Antonia's brother, thought to be dead but actually dumped on the abbey's doorstep. (hide spoiler)].

I'm at 56% now, and, yup, it's gotten more scandalous:-).

I'm really enjoying it. The Bloody Nun was bloody brilliant. I also like the bad-ass female characters that are appearing: (view spoiler)[Matilda just made a huge switch from innocent little pretender wanting only to be friends with Ambrosio, to bossing him around and just now going down into the abbey's crypt for some kind of weird (no doubt Satanic) ritual. I think the pious and self-righteous Ambrosio will rue the day he met Rosario/Matilda! (hide spoiler)]

Poor Agnes! I really hope (view spoiler)[ she isn't dead, and turns out to be held prisoner in the convent (hide spoiler)].

I admit that I've been skipping the verses of poems;-). Just not my thing.

Just finished it! I really liked it, overall. I rated it 4 stars. A few of the conversations between characters got a bit long;-).

Great ending! It did seem fitting.

Matthew Lewis must not have had much love for nuns or monks;-). Or maybe not for the Catholic faith in general?

I read somewhere that he was only 20 or 21 when he wrote The Monk? Crazy! I wonder if the book was read by many people at the time it was first published, or if it was more of an underground thing? Given the subject matter, it had to have been considered very risqué for the times.

I was recommending this crazy book to a friend and remembered the movie which I NEVER WATCHED! I forgot all about it!
